Basic PRISM desktop live streaming is free, according to PRISM’s June 5, 2025 announcement; electricity is the main cost to calculate for a single-platform setup. Measure the whole PC at the wall while it is streaming, then use the formula below.
Calculate the monthly electricity cost
Use this formula, with power measured in watts and your tariff in your local currency per kilowatt-hour:
Monthly electricity cost = average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours × electricity price per kWh
For a 30-day month of continuous streaming, use 720 hours. For example, if your measured PC draw is W watts and your electricity tariff is R currency units per kWh, the estimate is (W ÷ 1,000) × 720 × R. This is a formula, not a typical-PC estimate: no standard wattage is established for an unspecified low-budget computer.

Measure the complete streaming setup
Measure the PC at the wall while PRISM is running the scene, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you actually plan to use. A power supply’s rated capacity is not the same as the computer’s electricity consumption. Include a monitor, router or modem, lighting, or cooling only if those devices will be part of the always-on setup and are not already included in the measurement. If you measure equipment separately, calculate each load separately and add the costs.
Use a worksheet for your own estimate
- Average measured wall draw while streaming: ___ W
- Planned monthly hours: ___ h (use 720 h for a 30-day always-on month)
- Your electricity tariff: ___ currency units/kWh
- PC electricity: (W ÷ 1,000) × hours × tariff = ___
- Other always-on equipment, if applicable: measure and calculate separately, or measure the whole setup together.
Separate PRISM’s software price from the running cost
PRISM Live Studio’s June 5, 2025 announcement says, “Basic features will remain free to use without a subscription,” and includes live streaming among those features. A basic single-platform YouTube stream therefore does not need a PRISM subscription in the baseline cost estimate. The announcement listed PRISM Plus at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the US, for optional features including desktop multistreaming to up to six channels, premium templates, and ad removal. These are the announced US prices, not a guaranteed current quote; check PRISM’s current plan page before subscribing. If you stream only to YouTube and do not need those paid functions, do not add the subscription to the estimate.
Internet is another possible cost, but there is no universal broadband charge to add. Include a plan upgrade, overage, or data-cap fee only if your actual internet plan applies one. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations help you select a stream setting; they do not establish an ISP price.

Check whether the spare PC can handle the stream
PRISM’s published Windows minimum is a Core i3-9100 or higher, 8 GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or equivalent. Its general-streaming recommendation is a Core i5-8500 or higher, 16 GB RAM or more, and an RTX 2070 or equivalent. These are vendor specifications, not a guarantee that a particular PC will stay stable for 24 hours, especially with a complex scene or other software running.

Lower the workload before upgrading hardware
- Simplify scenes and reduce the number of active sources.
- Close resource-heavy programs that are not needed for streaming.
- Lower output resolution, bitrate, or frame rate if the stream is unstable or the PC is overloaded.
- Use hardware encoding if the PC has an appropriate discrete GPU.
- For limited processing power, PRISM’s guidance says to set the frame rate to 30 fps or lower.
Change one setting at a time and observe the result. A lower resolution or frame rate can reduce the computer’s workload, but the right compromise depends on the game footage, scene, and audience connection.
Choose a YouTube quality your PC and upload connection can sustain
YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends a video bitrate of 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Treat these as recommended settings, not proof that your upload connection can sustain them continuously. YouTube advises testing the selected quality against the available upload bandwidth.

These bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for the listed H.264 output targets. Leave room for connection variation and other network use rather than assuming the nominal upload rate is all available to the stream. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output, lower the target and test again.
Set up the stream and plan for interruptions
Confirm the channel is eligible
YouTube requires a verified channel to livestream, and the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access before relying on the PC for an unattended broadcast.

Test the exact scene and encoder before leaving it unattended
- In PRISM, prepare the scene and sources you intend to leave running.
- Select an output resolution and frame rate the PC can encode reliably; if processing power is limited, use 30 fps or lower.
- Set the bitrate to a level appropriate for the output and test it against the upload connection. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30.
- Run a test broadcast with the same scene and settings. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and connection interruptions before treating the setup as unattended-ready.
- Check how PRISM and the PC behave after a dropped connection, application error, or restart. The available specifications do not establish that any particular spare PC or automation setup will recover reliably without monitoring.
Decide whether one 24-hour broadcast or shorter segments fit your archive needs
A continuously available livestream and a complete YouTube replay are different outcomes. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need an archive, consider planned broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and maintain a local backup; a single 24-hour broadcast may not leave a complete replay. A local recording also needs storage and adds workload, so test that alongside streaming if you plan to use it.

Common cost and reliability problems
The electricity estimate seems too high or too low
Check that you used measured wall power rather than the power supply’s rating, entered watts rather than kilowatts, and used your actual tariff per kWh. Confirm whether your measurement includes the monitor and network equipment; add separate always-on devices only if they are part of your setup.
The PC drops frames or the encoder struggles
Reduce scene complexity, close background programs, lower resolution or bitrate, or use a suitable hardware encoder. If CPU power is limited, set 30 fps or lower. Retest the full scene rather than judging stability from an idle desktop.
The stream disconnects or buffers
Test the selected bitrate against upload capacity and reduce it if the connection cannot sustain it. Check whether other household network activity is competing for upload bandwidth, then retest. The actual cause can be the connection, the PC, or the streaming setup, so use the test broadcast to isolate the failure.

The livestream is available but the replay is incomplete or missing
Do not assume a broadcast over 12 hours will be archived: YouTube warns it may not be captured at all. Use shorter planned segments and a local recording if a complete archive matters.
The channel cannot start a livestream
Verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days before troubleshooting PRISM or the PC.
