For a 1080p30 H.264 stream, plan for about 17 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity; for 1080p60 H.264, plan for about 21 Mbps. Those targets include YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. The required speed is determined by your stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate—not by PRISM Live Studio alone. Your internet plan’s advertised upload speed is not a guarantee that this capacity will remain available to the stream.
Upload-speed targets by stream profile
YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations give the video bitrate. Applying its 20% headroom recommendation gives the practical upload-capacity targets below. Round up when choosing a real-world target.
| Output profile | Codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 16.8 Mbps; plan for about 17 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 14.4 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 20.4 Mbps; plan for about 21 Mbps |
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| 720p30 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps |
The targets are calculated by multiplying YouTube’s recommended video bitrate by 1.2. They describe available upload capacity for the stream, not a particular internet-plan tier. If you send parallel streams, add their bitrates together before applying headroom: the total must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s guidance accounts for primary and backup streams.
These are YouTube’s published recommendations; the cited help pages do not state a publication year. They are not a guarantee that a connection advertised at the same speed will be steady enough at every moment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the relevant output in PRISM Desktop
Choose the stream profile you intend to send, then configure PRISM’s output to match it. PRISM Desktop places bitrate under Settings > Output when Output Mode: Advanced is selected. Resolution and frame rate are under Settings > Video.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate. In Settings > Video, set the intended output, such as 1920×1080 at 30 fps or 60 fps. Use the corresponding row in the table to estimate the upload capacity needed.
- Set the bitrate. In Settings > Output, select Output Mode: Advanced and set the video bitrate for the profile and codec you are using. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding.
- Check the encoder’s keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Check available capacity, not just the plan label. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test under the conditions you expect during the broadcast, when other household or office devices may also be using the connection.
- Watch the stream’s health. If the connection or computer struggles, reduce resolution, bitrate or FPS in PRISM, then check the live stream again.
PRISM recommends using a hardware NVIDIA or AMD encoder when a dedicated graphics card is available. That can help with computer performance, but it does not increase internet upload capacity.

Stability matters during a 24/7 broadcast
A speed test is a snapshot, while a continuous broadcast depends on capacity remaining available and the connection staying stable. Other devices can use upload bandwidth, and weak or unstable Wi-Fi can contribute to disconnections. PRISM identifies insufficient upload speed, local-network instability and weak Wi-Fi as possible causes. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, connect the computer to the router over wired LAN, such as with an Ethernet cable. A wired link can improve consistency; it cannot make an internet service connection with insufficient upload capacity faster.
PRISM’s mobile documentation gives different figures: 4 Mbps for 720p and 6 Mbps for 1080p as general mobile recommendations, with adaptive bitrate. Its separate mobile stability guidance gives resolution-based upload ranges and advises at least twice the listed network bandwidth. These are mobile-specific recommendations, not a replacement for YouTube’s desktop encoder bitrate guidance above.

Plan separately for a complete 24-hour replay
Keeping a live feed running and preserving a full-day archive are different requirements. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete replay, plan a local recording as a backup rather than relying on YouTube to retain the entire 24-hour broadcast.
Troubleshoot drops, buffering or poor stream health
- The stream disconnects or drops frames: Compare the actual output profile and bitrate with the available upload capacity, including other devices’ use. Lower the bitrate, resolution or FPS if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- Upload speed fluctuates or Wi-Fi is weak: Test under expected conditions and try wired LAN. Ethernet can remove a weak Wi-Fi link from the chain, but cannot fix inadequate capacity from the internet provider.
- The computer struggles at high settings: Reduce resolution, bitrate or FPS in PRISM. If a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics card is available, PRISM recommends using its hardware encoder.
- A 24-hour replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local recording if the full archive matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep running on YouTube without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
