What the $202,000 estimate measures
A CPI conversion estimates how the consumer purchasing power of money changes over time: in broad terms, how much money is needed to buy a comparable basket of consumer goods and services. It does not tell you whether Arthur’s bounty was socially extraordinary, how it compared with wages or wealth in 1899, or what share of law-enforcement resources it represented. Those questions require different measures.

Why the 1899 conversion is approximate
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says its CPI inflation calculator uses the CPI-U, U.S. city average, all-items, not-seasonally-adjusted index. The documented calculator series begins in 1913, and for the current year the calculator uses the latest monthly index value. BLS CPI calculator documentation therefore does not provide an official calculator endpoint for 1899.
To reach back to 1899, the estimate relies on a historical extension of the CPI. MeasuringWorth’s extended U.S. CPI series explains that its historical series reaches earlier than 1913 and is identical to the BLS series only from 1978 onward. So the best concise description is an approximate historical-CPI conversion to 2026 consumer purchasing power—not a direct result from the BLS calculator.
