There is no dependable single price: the best recent auction benchmarks range from $1,503 for an Asteroids hologram artifact to $25,903 for an Allan Alcorn-provenance prototype. Those were different objects, and both prices include the buyer’s premium. They are individual historical auction results—not a general price guide or a guarantee of what another example will sell for.
Recent Atari Cosmos auction results
| Sale | Object | Result, including buyer’s premium | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 2024, RR Auction | Atari Cosmos prototype from Allan Alcorn’s collection | $25,903 | RR describes it as a circa-1980 prototype mock-up. It was nonfunctional because its logic board was absent; the lot included a signed provenance letter. See the lot record. |
| August 2024, RR Auction | A separate Atari Cosmos prototype from Alcorn’s collection | $19,460 | This is another provenance-specific result, but it is a distinct lot. Its description and condition should be evaluated on their own rather than averaged with the March sale. See the lot record. |
| August 2026, RR Auction | Asteroids hologram component | $1,503 | The artifact was cataloged with period advertising and an “Inside Story” specification sheet. It was not a complete Cosmos system. See the lot record. |
The figures above are the auction results reported for these lots, not a market-wide average. The prototype prices reflect unusual provenance and should not be applied automatically to an undocumented unit, a damaged part, or a standalone hologram.
Why the object matters more than the name
Atari promoted the Cosmos, also called The Third Dimension, as a tabletop game system using holographic imagery. The planned design paired holographic cartridges with an LED array. RR Auction lists nine intended games: Asteroids, Basketball, Dodge ’Em, Football, Outlaw, Road Runner, Sea Battle, Space Invaders, and Superman. Allan Alcorn’s signed letter, reproduced in RR Auction’s March 2024 listing, describes the intended arrangement: “The game consisted of a dual image hologram that was in front of an LED array, driven by a low-cost microprocessor that contained programs for all the games.” RR Auction’s prototype listing
The project was announced but did not become an ordinary retail console. A 1981 Play Meter report describes Atari’s plans for the system and a proposed test-market introduction of cartridges; that report documents Atari’s announced intentions, not proof that the system reached retail. Atari Museum’s account and reproduced trade-press material RR Auction likewise says the project was canceled before release. This history helps explain why the surviving market evidence consists of unusual prototypes and separate artifacts rather than a normal stream of used-console sales.

How to estimate an example you own
- Identify exactly what it is. Distinguish a prototype body, a hologram plate or cartridge, paperwork, or a group of parts. A hologram sale is not a system valuation.
- Document condition and completeness. Record what is present or missing, whether the item is functional, and any damage. The $25,903 prototype result, for example, was explicitly nonfunctional and missing its logic board.
- Establish provenance. Keep original letters, ownership records, labels, and other documentation together. The high prototype results cited here were specifically tied to Allan Alcorn’s collection; they are not evidence that an unproven example would command the same amount.
- Compare like with like. Use completed sales for the same type of artifact and similar condition, and check whether the published result includes the buyer’s premium. Do not calculate a simple average from the two distinct prototype lots and the hologram artifact.
- Get expert input for a transaction decision. With only a few singular, dissimilar sales, the available records do not establish a reliable estimate for an undocumented example. A specialist appraisal or fresh comparable completed sales are more useful than treating one headline result as a standard price.
Other reported prices deserve caution
A 2025 BGR article mentions a $7,500 sale in 2010 for a unit with missing parts and a $444 sale in 2025 for a Superman hologram overlay. Those are secondary reports whose underlying sale records were not independently confirmed here, so treat them as leads rather than primary valuation comparables. BGR’s report
