Its public disclosures describe revenue sources and sharing across LoL Esports, but do not break out Worlds’ sales, sponsorships, costs, or net income. Any precise dollar figure for the tournament would be speculation.
How does Worlds make money?
Riot identifies several ways LoL Esports generates revenue, though its disclosures do not say how much each contributes specifically to Worlds. The distinction matters: an event can generate sales without those sales equaling the organizer’s retained revenue or profit.
- In-game digital content: Riot cites esports-related digital sales, including Worlds content, emotes, and Worlds winner skins, as a scalable revenue source. Its 2024 model pools LoL Esports digital revenue for team allocations. Riot’s 2024 strategy announcement does not state Worlds-only sales.
- Sponsorships and media: Riot describes these as other direct revenue sources. Under its 2024 policy, it would contribute 50% of such revenue to the ecosystem after recovering its annual investment in LoL Esports; that is not a disclosed Worlds sponsorship or media figure.
- Event products and sponsor activations: Riot has described event passes, sponsor Drops, and a watch platform as parts of its monetization approach. Its 2023 description of the Worlds Virtual Pass says it bundled digital products, exclusive physical merchandise, and physical and digital sponsor goods. These examples establish formats, not sales totals or Riot’s retained share. Riot’s 2023 explanation discusses the broader LoL Esports business.
Riot President of Publishing & Esports John Needham wrote in 2024: “In-game digital sales are the most scalable opportunity to drive meaningful revenues.” He also said Riot would contribute 50% of other direct revenues “once Riot recovers its annual investment in LoL Esports.” Those statements describe the ecosystem’s model, not Worlds’ event accounts.
What Riot’s revenue-sharing percentages mean
Riot’s 2024 Global Revenue Pool allocates LoL Esports digital revenue among three categories. The percentages are shares of that pool, not percentages of Worlds revenue or a disclosure of total sales.

| Fandom shares | 15% | Linked to fandom |
Riot’s 2023 account described an earlier partnership model in which teams received 50% of certain league revenues, not profits. It also said Riot paid a percentage of digital sales for esports content and funded prize pools for participating international competitions. In 2024, Riot described a proposed shift toward fixed stipends and digital revenue sharing for teams in the LCK, LCS, and LEC. These statements refer to different dates and scopes; neither is a Worlds income statement.
Why viewership and prize money do not answer the question
Viewership measures an audience, not dollars earned. For the 2021 Worlds final, Riot reported nearly 74 million peak concurrent viewers and a nearly 31 million average-minute audience. Peak concurrent viewership counts people watching at one time globally; average-minute audience measures the average audience in each minute. Neither figure is cumulative unique reach, revenue, or a conversion rate to sales. Riot’s 2023 article defines the figures.

A prize pool is money paid to competitors, not the tournament’s revenue or profit. Likewise, a large audience cannot be translated into earnings without disclosed sales, advertising rates, sponsorship terms, costs, and a method for attributing them to Worlds. Needham noted in 2023 that sponsor categories are limited and revenues do not necessarily scale directly with audience size. He also said Riot received “de minimis streaming platform revenues in the West” despite billions of hours of viewership. That observation is about Western broadcasts and streaming-platform revenue, not every revenue source or every region.
Does the $42 million skin-sales figure apply to Worlds?
No. Riot reported that a VALORANT Champions skin pack generated $42 million in 2022, with half distributed to competing teams. That figure concerns VALORANT, not League of Legends or Worlds, and cannot be used to estimate Worlds skin sales. Riot’s 2023 business explanation presents the VALORANT example separately.

What is—and is not—publicly established
The cited Riot materials describe LoL Esports revenue sources, team-sharing mechanisms, and audience measures. They do not disclose a Worlds-specific gross revenue total, merchandise sales, sponsorship value, media income, operating cost, or net profit. Without those event-level figures, neither a precise revenue estimate nor a profit calculation is supported.
