In Borderlands 4, Specializations are an additional build-customization layer, separate from a Vault Hunter’s Action Skills and branching passive skill paths. You can change your Specialization at a Specialization Respec Machine; Gearbox’s October 2025 update notes recorded a reduced respec cost of 1,500 Eridium, though the current in-game price may differ.
Where Specializations fit in a build
Gearbox Creative Director Graeme Timmins describes the ordinary Vault Hunter skill framework as three signature Action Skills, three branching paths of passive abilities, and enhancements for Action Skills through augments and capstones. That distinction matters when planning a character: consider the Specialization alongside the Vault Hunter’s Action Skill and passive choices, rather than assuming it replaces them. The official material cited here does not provide a complete, current roster of Specialization effects, so it is not enough to prescribe a specific setup.
Can you change a Specialization?
Yes. Gearbox’s October 2025 update notes document a Specialization Respec Machine. Those notes, originally published October 14, 2025 and updated July 2, 2026, say its cost was reduced from 5,000 to 1,500 Eridium. That is the cost recorded in those notes, not a guarantee of the price in your current game; check the machine in-game before committing. Read the official update notes.

Why old Specialization guides can be outdated
Gearbox has adjusted Specialization-related effects in updates. For example, the October 2025 notes changed Groundbreaker so it stores only Gun, Action Skill, and Ordnance damage; the notes explain that its previous behavior could cause recursive loops and potentially infinite damage.
January 2026 notes document further balance changes: Daredevil’s Action Skill cooldown rate was adjusted to 0.5%, and it received a multiplicative Action Skill Damage bonus. Runner’s Melee Damage bonus changed from additive to multiplicative. These are specific patch-note changes, not a complete account of every Specialization or its current values. Check the update date and version whenever you follow a build recommendation. The January 2026 Major Update Notes also say Gearbox wants each Vault Hunter to have build diversity, with each Action Skill having its own pros and cons.

Those details should be checked in your current in-game Specialization screen; avoid relying on an undated guide for mechanics that may have changed.
Shared progression notes should not be read as proof that Specializations or their points are shared between characters. The March 2026 update lists shared additions such as collectibles, activities, map progress, SDU tokens, Vault Powers, vehicle skins, and hover drives, but does not list Specialization points.
