At level V, the listed bonus is +3 damage in Java Edition and +6.25 in Bedrock Edition. Those figures are the enchantment’s extra damage, not the weapon’s total hit damage.
Sharpness damage by level
The bonus depends on edition. The table shows extra damage added by Sharpness, rather than total damage from a weapon hit.
| Sharpness level | Java Edition extra damage | Bedrock Edition extra damage |
|---|---|---|
| I | +1 | +1.25 |
| II | +1.5 | +2.5 |
| III | +2 | +3.75 |
| IV | +2.5 | +5 |
| V | +3 | +6.25 |
The Java values follow the formula 0.5 × level + 0.5; the Bedrock values follow 1.25 × level. The reference values are from Minecraft Wiki material accessed in 2026: Sharpness and Enchanting. A Minecraft Feedback discussion also reflects the edition comparison, though it is not a release-note specification: Minecraft Feedback.
Is Sharpness stronger in Bedrock or Java?
At the same listed level, Bedrock’s bonus is higher. At Sharpness V, it adds 6.25 damage in Bedrock versus 3 in Java—a difference of 3.25 damage. This compares only Sharpness’s added damage, not a complete weapon hit.

Why there is no fixed percentage increase
Sharpness adds a flat amount, so the percentage increase depends on the weapon’s starting attack damage. The same bonus represents a larger share of a lower-damage weapon’s baseline than it does of a higher-damage weapon’s. Any percentage comparison therefore needs to name the weapon and its baseline.
What determines total hit damage?
A weapon’s base damage and the Sharpness bonus are only part of a full hit calculation. The available reference values do not establish a complete total for every weapon, target defense, attack condition, or game version. Avoid treating the table’s bonus as the total damage dealt.

Edition and version matter when applying a precise gameplay value. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation says Sharpness increases melee attack damage and lists swords and axes as supported item types: Minecraft Bedrock enchantment list. Mojang’s Java snapshot notes describe level-based enchantment effect values and identify minecraft:damage as the attack-damage effect, but that snapshot document is not a current build-specific Sharpness table: Java Edition snapshot 24w18a.
