How Much RAM Does Aternos Provide? Find Your Server’s Exact Allocation

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Aternos does not provide one fixed amount of RAM to every server. Your allocation depends on the Minecraft version and server software. Aternos’s official example is 2,400 MB for Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1, but the exact amount for your server appears in the live server overview after you start it.

How much RAM does Aternos provide?

Aternos does not assign the same amount of RAM to every server. The allocation depends on the Minecraft version and server software you select. As one official example, Aternos lists 2,400 MB for a Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1 server. That is an example allocation, not a universal amount for every Aternos server.

To see the amount assigned to your own server, start it and check the live server overview in the Aternos panel. The overview shows the currently assigned RAM together with memory usage and other performance information. This panel value is more reliable than an old forum post or a general estimate because Aternos can adjust allocations by software and version. See Aternos’s official server RAM explanation for the current policy.

What determines your Aternos RAM allocation?

Aternos says that memory assignment varies according to factors including:

  • Protects rack-mount equipment from overheating, performance issues, and shortened lifespans.
  • Programmable thermostat controller with automated speed control, alarm warnings, and backup memory.
  • Premium anodized aluminum construction with CNC-machined detailing for a professional appearance.
  • Size: 3U Rack Space | Design: Intake | Airflow: 60 to 300 CFM | Noise: 12 to 38 dBA | Bearings: Dual Ball
  • Server software: Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Forge, Fabric, and other software types can receive different allocations.
  • Minecraft version: Newer versions generally require more resources than older versions.
  • Modded versus unmodded gameplay: Modded servers commonly need more memory, although a larger allocation does not automatically make one software choice faster.

It is therefore incorrect to say that every Aternos server gets exactly 2 GB, exactly 2.4 GB, or exactly 2.5 GB of RAM. The 2,400 MB figure applies to the specific Vanilla 1.20.1 example documented by Aternos.

How to check the RAM assigned to your server

  1. Sign in to Aternos and open the server you want to check.
  2. Start the server. The allocation and live usage information are shown when the server is running.
  3. Open or view the server’s overview section in the panel.
  4. Read the RAM allocation and compare it with the usage graph or indicator.

If you have changed the server software or Minecraft version, check the overview again after starting the server. Do not assume that the amount shown for a previous configuration still applies.

Does Aternos RAM increase with the player-slot limit?

No. The player-slot setting controls how many people can join at the same time; it is not a RAM control. Raising the slot count does not add memory or directly improve server performance. Aternos explains the distinction in its guide to server options.

That also means you should be cautious with older claims that Aternos assigns a fixed amount of RAM per player. The current documented behavior is based on server software and Minecraft version, not simply the number of slots you enter.

What does Aternos RAM actually do?

RAM is the server’s temporary working memory. Minecraft uses it for information such as active players, loaded chunks, entities, and the data required by plugins, mods, and worlds while the server is running.

RAM is different from storage. Storage holds your world files, region files, plugins, mods, and other data on disk. Aternos documents a 4 GB server-file limit; that is a storage limit, not a statement that your server has 4 GB of RAM. You can read the separate Aternos server-size documentation for that disk limit.

  • 2. The noise control design keeps the fan at a low noise level when cooling the equipment, making it highly suitable for use in quiet offices or commercial Spaces.
  • 3. The compact design can be installed in any 19-inch cabinet and only occupies one unit of space.
  • 4. The simple LCD screen enables users to adjust the temperature freely and easily.
  • 5. Air is drawn in through the exhaust system at the top of the fan to effectively regulate the equipment temperature.

Also, a high memory-use reading is not automatically proof that the server is out of RAM. Java may retain allocated memory and continue displaying it as used until the runtime needs to reclaim it. Look for symptoms such as crashes, memory-related errors, or performance data rather than judging the situation from a percentage alone.

Will more RAM fix Aternos server lag?

Not necessarily. RAM is only one possible bottleneck. Aternos identifies several other causes of lag, including low ticks per second (TPS), too many entities, excessive loaded chunks, exploration that generates new terrain, plugins, mods, worlds, and temporary load on the host machine. Network distance can matter too: Aternos says its servers operate in data centers in Europe, so players in the United States and other distant regions may experience more latency even when the server has sufficient RAM.

Use the symptom to choose the fix:

What you notice Possible cause or next step
Players and mobs move in slow motion Check TPS and investigate entities, redstone machines, farms, chunks, plugins, or mods.
The server takes a long time to load a new area Exploring and generating chunks can cause temporary load; reduce simultaneous exploration or pre-generate cautiously if your setup supports it.
Players teleport or blocks break late Check network latency as well as server TPS. Distance from Aternos’s European data centers may contribute.
The server crashes with memory-related errors Review the server log, reduce demanding mods or settings, and confirm the assigned RAM in the panel.
Lag began after installing a plugin or mod Test the new addition and check compatibility before assuming that more RAM is the answer.

For performance-oriented Minecraft servers, Aternos recommends Paper or Purpur. Aternos notes that these can perform better overall than modded software even when the modded server receives a larger memory allocation. Choose software for compatibility with the gameplay and mods you need—not merely because it appears to receive more RAM.

For deeper diagnosis, Aternos recommends checking TPS and using spark, a Minecraft performance profiler, where it is compatible with your server setup. Its official lag guide provides the relevant troubleshooting context.

Can you manually add RAM to an Aternos server?

No. Aternos does not let users type in a custom RAM amount, purchase a conventional RAM upgrade on the free platform, or transfer RAM from their own computer to the hosted server. The allocation is controlled by Aternos according to the server software and Minecraft version. Aternos describes its service as free and says that features cannot be purchased directly on the Aternos platform.

Can you temporarily boost Aternos RAM?

Aternos currently documents a temporary RAM Boost program operated through its collaboration with Medal. Under the instructions in the Aternos Help Center, uploading a Minecraft or Hytale clip through the Medal app makes you eligible for a 500 MB boost lasting seven days.

  • Size: 1U Rack Space | Design: Top Exhaust | Airflow: 60 to 300 CFM | Noise: 12 to 38 dBA | Bearings: Dual Ball

The documented limits are:

  • Each boost adds 500 MB temporarily.
  • Boosts last seven days.
  • You can repeat the process weekly.
  • Up to five active boosts can be stacked.
  • The maximum documented temporary increase is therefore 2.5 GB.

The current instructions require the Medal app on Windows, recording a clip, redeeming the associated quest, and restarting the Aternos server so the boost can activate. This is not a permanent change to the server’s base allocation. Because the program depends on an active Aternos–Medal collaboration and its instructions can change, check the current Aternos RAM Boost instructions before relying on it. The boost should not be treated as universally available outside the conditions listed there.

What if your server needs more selectable RAM?

If your server has outgrown its Aternos allocation, Aternos points users toward exaroton, a separate paid hosting service built and operated by the Aternos team. It is not a paid Aternos tier.

Exaroton’s official pricing documentation lists selectable allocations from 2 GB to 16 GB of RAM. Billing is based on actual running time at a rate of one credit per GB of RAM per hour. For example, a server configured with 4 GB uses four credits per hour while it is running, according to that pricing model. Exaroton also supports importing an existing Aternos server, which can make migration easier if you want to keep your world and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That option is most relevant when you need a predictable, user-selected memory amount, more control, or features such as no queue. Review the official exaroton pricing information before switching, since prices, credits, and available features can change.

Aternos RAM: the practical answer

For a specific Aternos server, the answer is whatever allocation appears in its live server overview after you start it. Aternos does not publish one universal RAM amount for all versions and software. The official example is 2,400 MB for Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1, while modded and newer configurations may receive different amounts.

Check the allocation first, but do not equate RAM with overall performance. Player slots do not add memory, the 4 GB file limit is storage rather than RAM, and lag can come from TPS, entities, chunks, plugins, mods, network latency, or host load. If a temporary boost is available, the Medal program can add up to 2.5 GB under its documented seven-day stacking rules. If you need permanent control over a larger allocation, exaroton is the separate paid alternative to investigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much RAM does a normal Aternos server get?

Aternos does not use one fixed RAM amount for every server. The allocation depends on server software and Minecraft version. Aternos gives 2,400 MB for Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1 as an example, but the live server overview is the authoritative value for your configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does increasing Aternos player slots give more RAM?

No. Increasing the player-slot limit only changes how many players may join simultaneously; it does not increase RAM or directly improve performance.

Will more RAM stop my Aternos server from lagging?

Not always. Lag can result from low TPS, entities, loaded or newly generated chunks, plugins, mods, worlds, network latency, or temporary host load. Check TPS and investigate the specific cause before concluding that RAM is insufficient.

How do I get a temporary Aternos RAM boost?

Aternos currently documents a Medal-based temporary boost of 500 MB for seven days per boost, with up to five active boosts stackable for a maximum of 2.5 GB. The program requires the conditions in Aternos’s current instructions and is not a permanent base-RAM upgrade.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Aternos provides variable RAM based on your Minecraft version and server software. Its documented example is 2,400 MB for Vanilla 1.20.1, but your exact amount is shown in the running server overview. You cannot manually set the base allocation or increase it by raising player slots.
