If the Jagex Launcher is not working, start by closing every launcher process—including the one still running in the Windows system tray—then disable any VPN and retry. Next check firewall permissions, confirm that you are signing in with a Jagex Account, and turn off launcher test features. These steps address the most common update, authentication, and connection failures without deleting game files.

Quick fixes by symptom
| What is happening? | Do this first | If it continues |
|---|---|---|
| “Could not authenticate” | Disconnect your VPN and retry. | Confirm that you use a Jagex Account, then check firewall, proxy, and network filtering. |
| “Please wait while an update is applied” | Close every Jagex Launcher process from the system tray and restart it. | Reboot, then perform a clean reinstall if the message returns. |
| Mac installer does nothing | Disable Auto Proxy Discovery in the active network service. | Download the installer again from Jagex’s official support download page. |
| “Timeout waiting for window to load” | Check whether the PC is running Windows 10 or older and review the legacy Internet Explorer 11 requirement. | Use Jagex’s official direct-download route or reinstall cleanly. |
| Launcher opens but the game asks for a login again | Make sure the launcher and game client are running with consistent permissions. | Reinstall the affected client or the launcher. |
| Launcher will not download | Check VPN, firewall, proxy, and network connection settings. | Use Jagex’s official direct Windows or Mac download. |
| Linux user cannot use the launcher | Note that Linux is not officially supported by Jagex. | Use a supported operating system or review Jagex’s warning about third-party Linux solutions. |
1. Close duplicate Jagex Launcher processes
A launcher can remain open in the background after its window appears to have closed. Multiple launcher instances can prevent an update from completing and commonly produce the message “Please wait while an update is applied.”

Windows
- Look at the notification area on the right side of the taskbar. Select the small up-arrow if necessary to show hidden icons.
- Right-click the Jagex Launcher icon and choose the option to exit or close it.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- In the list of running processes, close remaining Jagex Launcher processes if they are still present.
- Start the launcher again.
Closing only the visible window may not be enough because the launcher can continue running in the tray. If it remains stuck after all launcher processes are closed, restart Windows before attempting a reinstall.
2. Disable your VPN and test the connection
Temporarily disconnect from your VPN and try again. Jagex says VPNs can interfere with access to its games, websites, and launcher, including authentication. A VPN is therefore a possible cause of the problem—not a recommended fix for it.
For a broader connection failure, work through these checks:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Restart the modem or router.
- Try another network temporarily, such as a mobile hotspot, if available. This can show whether the problem is specific to your home or school network.
- Check whether firewall or security software is blocking the launcher.
- Check for a proxy configured in Windows or macOS.
- Use Jagex’s official game client and download path rather than a third-party launcher or installer.
Advanced Windows network reset
If several applications have network problems and ordinary router troubleshooting has not helped, reset the relevant Windows network components. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
Restart the computer afterward. These commands affect the system network stack, so treat them as an advanced step rather than a routine launcher fix. If this is a managed work, school, or shared network, ask the administrator before changing network configuration.
3. Check firewall and antivirus permissions
Security software may block the launcher, the game client, or the domains used to connect to RuneScape services. Jagex’s firewall guidance identifies these programs and network destinations as items that may need permission:
JagexLauncher.exeJava.exeRuneScape.exers2client.exeosclient.exe*.runescape.com
Add narrowly scoped exceptions using the instructions for your firewall or antivirus product. Do not disable antivirus protection wholesale just to test the launcher. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, you may need an administrator to approve the connection.

Jagex also lists ports 443, 43594, and 43595 in its firewall guidance. Do not begin by forwarding these ports on your router. Port forwarding is an advanced network change, is not automatically required on a home connection, and should be considered only when the documented network conditions justify it.
4. Match the launcher and game-client permissions
If the launcher opens but the game client asks you to log in again, check how both programs are being run. The launcher and client should use consistent permissions and the same normal operating-system user.
In particular, undo experiments with Run as administrator unless Jagex specifically requires that permission for the task:
- Do not run the launcher as Administrator while starting the game client normally.
- Do not assume that administrator mode is universally required.
- Start both components normally under the same Windows user account and test again.
Jagex’s FAQ says the launcher no longer requires administrator access for ordinary installation, although installing the official Old School RuneScape client through the launcher may require administrator access in some circumstances.
5. Make sure you are using a Jagex Account
The Jagex Launcher requires a Jagex Account. A legacy RuneScape login and a Jagex Account are related to the same game ecosystem, but they are not interchangeable credentials for every launcher login flow.
If you signed out and your old RuneScape username or password no longer works, follow Jagex’s official account-upgrade process. If the launcher says you need to make changes to use it, use that upgrade flow rather than repeatedly submitting the old password.
6. Disable Jagex Launcher test features
If the launcher still opens far enough to display its settings, turn off its test features:

- Open the Jagex Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Find Test Features.
- Disable the test features.
- Restart the launcher.
Jagex specifically recommends disabling test features for users experiencing launcher problems. This is a low-risk step and is worth trying before deleting installation folders.
7. Fix a Mac installer that does nothing
When the Mac installer does not run and displays no useful error, Jagex identifies automatic proxy discovery as a possible cause. Disable it temporarily and retry:
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select the active network service, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Choose Details.
- Open Proxies.
- Disable Automatic Proxy Discovery.
- Retry the Jagex Launcher installer.
This is a targeted diagnostic change, not a general recommendation to remove proxy settings. If the Mac is connected to a corporate or school network, automatic proxy discovery may be intentional. Ask the network administrator before changing it.
8. Handle the older Windows installer error
Jagex documents a “Timeout waiting for window to load” installer error on some Windows 10-and-older computers. Its guidance notes that Internet Explorer 11 may be required by the installer even if it is not your normal browser.
Do not interpret this as a reason to install Internet Explorer on every current Windows PC. First check the Windows version and whether the documented legacy condition applies. On a current supported system, try Jagex’s official direct-download path instead of obtaining an installer from an unofficial mirror.
9. Use Jagex’s official direct download
If the normal download button on the Jagex website fails, use the official Jagex support article that provides direct Windows and Mac launcher downloads. Downloading from that support path helps avoid an outdated, modified, or incomplete installer.
Avoid random download sites, modified launchers, registry cleaners, and “gaming repair” utilities. They are not substitutes for checking the account, network, security, platform, and installation conditions documented by Jagex.

10. Perform a clean reinstall
Use a clean reinstall when the launcher repeatedly crashes, will not update after duplicate processes have been closed, or continues to produce installation errors after the network and permissions checks. Do not delete your entire RuneScape game library or account data as a routine troubleshooting step.
Clean reinstall on Windows
- Uninstall Jagex Launcher through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, Control Panel, or the installer’s Remove option.
- After uninstalling, check for and delete these residual launcher folders if they exist:
C:Program Files (x86)Jagex LauncherC:ProgramDataJagex LauncherC:UsersusernameAppDataLocalProgramsJagex LauncherC:UsersusernameAppDataLocalJagex Launcher
- Remove other remaining Jagex or RuneScape launcher folders only when they clearly belong to the old installation.
- Download a fresh installer from Jagex’s official support download path.
- Install it to a new location rather than reusing a path that may contain damaged files.
- Open the launcher and verify that it starts, signs in, updates, and launches the affected game.
Clean reinstall on Mac
- Remove Jagex Launcher from the Applications folder.
- Empty the relevant Trash location or otherwise clear the removed application.
- Delete the launcher support folder at
~/Library/Application Support/Jagex Launcher/. - Look for other remaining Jagex or RuneScape launcher folders and remove only folders clearly associated with the old launcher installation.
- Download and run a fresh installer from Jagex’s official source.
- Complete the installation and test the launcher before changing other game files.
Safety note: residual-folder cleanup should be limited to locations identified by Jagex or folders that clearly belong to the launcher. Do not delete a complete game library, personal files, or account data without a specific reason.
11. Check whether your operating system is supported
Jagex lists the launcher as supporting Windows 7 or later and macOS 10.13 or later. The current RuneScape and Old School RuneScape PC clients have their own requirements; the listed current clients require 64-bit Windows 10 or later and have separate hardware and graphics specifications.
This distinction matters: a computer may meet the launcher requirement but still fail to run a current game client. If the launcher opens and the game starts but performance or graphics are poor, treat that as a client or hardware problem rather than automatically reinstalling the launcher. Check Jagex’s current recommended specifications and driver guidance for the game involved.
Linux limitation
The Jagex Launcher and Jagex Accounts are not officially supported on Linux. Community projects may allow Windows applications to run through compatibility layers, but those projects are not maintained or secured by Jagex. Jagex says third-party content is used at the user’s own risk.
Consequently, a Linux wrapper is not an official Jagex fix. For supported troubleshooting, use a supported Windows or macOS installation. If you choose to investigate a community solution, follow Jagex’s own Linux warning and do not treat the project as an endorsed launcher.

Problems that appear only after the game window opens—such as low frame rates, graphics errors, or driver crashes—belong to the game’s specifications and graphics-driver troubleshooting, not necessarily to the launcher.
13. Prepare information for Jagex Support
If the documented fixes fail, collect diagnostic information before contacting support. These reports do not automatically repair the launcher; they give support staff system details needed to investigate the failure.
- Windows: open DxDiag, choose Save All Information, and keep the resulting report for your support request.
- Mac: open About This Mac > System Report and save the report.
Include the exact error text, whether the failure affects the launcher or only one game, your operating-system version, whether a VPN or proxy is in use, and which steps you already tried. Do not include your password or recovery codes.

What not to do
- Do not buy or enable a VPN to solve an authentication problem; a VPN can be the cause.
- Do not disable antivirus protection permanently. Add a targeted exception instead.
- Do not assume the launcher always needs administrator access.
- Do not forward router ports as a first step.
- Do not download launchers or clients from unofficial mirrors.
- Do not use registry cleaners or aggressive system cleaners as a universal solution.
- Do not delete the whole RuneScape installation or account data when only launcher files need to be removed.
- Do not present an unofficial Linux compatibility project as supported by Jagex.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix “Please wait while an update is applied” in Jagex Launcher?
Close every Jagex Launcher instance, including the icon in the Windows system tray. If the update message remains, end remaining launcher processes in Task Manager, restart Windows, and then try a clean reinstall if necessary.
Why does Jagex Launcher say it could not authenticate?
Disconnect the VPN temporarily and retry. Jagex says VPNs can interfere with launcher access and authentication. If that does not help, check your Jagex Account credentials, firewall, proxy, and network filtering.
What should I do if the Jagex Launcher Mac installer does nothing?
In macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Network, select the active network service, choose Details > Proxies, disable Automatic Proxy Discovery, and run the installer again. Do not change managed network settings without asking the administrator.
Does Jagex Launcher always need administrator access?
No. Jagex says the launcher no longer requires administrator access for ordinary installation, although installing the official Old School RuneScape client through the launcher may require it in some situations. Run the launcher and client with consistent permissions.

Is the Jagex Launcher supported on Linux?
No. Jagex does not officially support the Jagex Launcher or Jagex Accounts on Linux. Community compatibility projects are not Jagex-maintained or secured and are used at the user’s own risk.
The Bottom Line
Most Jagex Launcher problems can be narrowed down without deleting game files: close duplicate processes, disable VPNs, check firewall and proxy settings, use the correct Jagex Account, and disable test features. If those checks fail, use Jagex’s official direct download or perform the platform-specific clean reinstall. Treat Linux and older Windows installer errors as compatibility limitations rather than ordinary launcher bugs.
