For a concrete example, PlayStation specifies a clear 1 m × 1 m area for seated or standing PS VR2 play and at least 2 m × 2 m for room-scale play. Nintendo recommends a 12 ft × 10 ft play area for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, a different kind of setup with its own requirements. Those figures are not interchangeable or universal minimums.
What counts as space for motion gaming?
Measure the clear area where the player or accessory will move, not simply the dimensions of the room. A room can be large enough on paper but still have too little usable space if furniture, a low table, cables or other obstacles occupy the play area. The player’s stance is only part of the measurement: arm and controller movement may extend beyond the body.

There are also different kinds of guidance. A manufacturer may specify a minimum play area for a particular play style, recommend a footprint for the best experience in a particular game, or advise users to leave a clear area without giving a dimension. Keep those categories separate when deciding whether your setup fits.
- Clear dimensions: the length and width of the unobstructed area.
- Play style: whether the game supports seated, standing or room-scale play, and which one you intend to use.
- Movement range: whether the player can move arms or controllers freely without hitting nearby objects.
- Game-specific conditions: requirements such as a flat surface or a maximum distance between the console and a physical accessory.
PlayStation puts the key principle plainly: “The space required for a play area depends on the play style of the PS VR2 game you want to play.” Its guidance is specific to PS VR2, not a universal rule for motion gaming.

Published space guidance for three different setups
The examples below illustrate why it is important to check the guidance for the exact device and game. A VR play-area minimum and a recommended footprint for a toy-car game describe different setups and should not be treated as equivalent measures.
| Setup | Published clear area or guidance | Other condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS VR2, seated or standing | At least 1 m × 1 m (3 ft 4 in × 3 ft 4 in), according to PlayStation Support | Leave enough additional room to move the Sense controllers freely. | A minimum for these play styles; the game’s supported play style determines what is needed. |
| PS VR2, room-scale | 2 m × 2 m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in) or larger, according to PlayStation Support | The play area should be clear for the selected room-scale game. | A distinct, larger requirement than the seated or standing area. |
| Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit | Nintendo recommends at least 12 ft × 10 ft for the best gameplay experience. | Keep the kart within 15 ft of the Switch; race on a flat surface. | A recommendation for this game, not a general minimum for Nintendo Switch motion games. |
| KINHANK MotionX | The vendor says to use a clear, well-lit area and leave enough space for the selected game’s movements; it does not state a fixed minimum on the cited page. | Check the requirements for the game you plan to play. | Use the game’s movement needs to judge the area; do not infer a numeric minimum. |
PlayStation’s figures come from its PS VR2 play-area setup guidance; its PS VR2 features page also describes play-area features. Nintendo Australia’s space guidance for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit gives the game-specific recommendation. The KINHANK MotionX vendor page describes a clear, well-lit area but does not set a dimension: KINHANK MotionX setup guidance. The cited pages do not state a publication year.
How to measure your available play area
Measure only the portion of the floor that can remain clear during play. If you need to move a chair or table every session, include that rearrangement in your setup plan rather than counting the occupied floor as available space.

- Identify the exact game and play style. Look up the manufacturer’s setup information for the console and the game. For PS VR2, check whether the game supports seated, standing or room-scale play; a room-scale setup calls for a different area than seated or standing play.
- Mark the intended rectangle. Use a tape measure to mark its length and width on the floor. For PS VR2 seated or standing play, compare the clear rectangle with the stated 1 m × 1 m minimum; for room-scale, compare it with 2 m × 2 m or larger. For Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, use Nintendo’s recommended 12 ft × 10 ft footprint as the reference for the best gameplay experience.
- Remove obstacles from the full movement area. Clear furniture and other objects from where the player, arms and controllers may move. Do not count a strip of floor as clear if reaching or turning would put a person or controller into an obstacle.
- Check conditions beyond the floor dimensions. For Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, confirm the surface is flat and the kart can stay within 15 ft of the Switch. For other games, check whether their instructions name additional placement or movement conditions.
- Confirm the setup in the device’s configuration. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for defining or checking the play area, then make sure the marked clear space still matches the chosen game and play style.
The dimensions describe a rectangular area, not an area-equivalent circle or diagonal. A narrow space with the same approximate floor area may not offer the required length and width. Measure both sides rather than relying on a room’s total square footage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much extra room should you leave?
The published PS VR2 minimums do not mean that the player’s entire movement range fits inside the bare dimensions automatically: PlayStation separately says to leave enough additional room to move the Sense controllers freely. The practical test is whether the player can perform the movements called for by the game without striking furniture, walls or other obstacles.
No universal extra margin is established in the cited setup guidance. The space needed beyond the stated dimensions depends on the movements of the player and the controllers, so do not add an invented fixed number to a manufacturer’s measurement. If you cannot move freely within the marked boundary, clear more space, choose a supported play style that fits, or select a different game or location.
For a setup without a numeric dimension, such as the cited KINHANK MotionX page, the right approach is to check the selected game’s movements and preserve a clear, well-lit area around them. The absence of a stated minimum is not evidence that no space is needed.
Common measurement mistakes
- Applying one device’s number to every motion game. The 1 m × 1 m and 2 m × 2 m figures are PS VR2 guidance; Nintendo’s 12 ft × 10 ft figure is a recommendation for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
- Treating a recommendation as a minimum. Nintendo describes 12 ft × 10 ft as recommended for the best gameplay experience. Preserve that wording rather than presenting it as an absolute threshold.
- Measuring the room instead of the clear floor. Furniture and obstacles reduce usable space even when the room’s overall dimensions seem sufficient.
- Ignoring arm and controller movement. A player may stand within a measured square yet still need extra space to move controllers freely.
- Forgetting accessory distance or surface conditions. A floor rectangle alone does not cover Nintendo’s separate guidance to keep the kart within 15 ft of the Switch and use a flat surface.
- Assuming an older console has the same requirements. The figures here do not establish minimums for other consoles or older motion systems. Consult the setup instructions for the exact hardware and game.
Which guidance should you follow?
Use the most specific applicable instruction: the game’s supported play style and setup information for your device. Where the manufacturer gives a minimum for a specific play style, use that minimum as the starting point and preserve any separate instruction about controller movement. Where it gives a recommendation for a particular game, treat it as a recommended footprint rather than a universal requirement. Where it gives no number, do not substitute a number from another product.
Before playing, verify that the whole intended area is clear, that the player can move as the game requires, and that any stated surface or accessory-distance conditions are met. If the area does not fit the selected mode, the options are to clear more floor, use a supported play style that needs less space, or choose a game whose setup fits the available location.
