Sony has announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan, model CFI-2200B02S, priced at ¥55,000 including tax. It goes on sale November 19, 2026, with reservations scheduled to begin October 20 at Japanese PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites. This is not a globally available black PS5: Sony says it is limited to use in Japan, requires the console language to be Japanese, and can be used only with a PlayStation account set to Japan.
Price and release date
The Japanese suggested retail price is ¥55,000 including tax. Sony has set the release date for November 19, 2026, and says reservations begin October 20 through PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan. Retailer stock and preorder listings have not been confirmed.

The price is for the digital-only console. The matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, is a separate purchase at ¥11,980 including tax and is also scheduled for November 19. Buying both at their announced prices totals ¥66,980 including tax.
Who can use this PS5?
Sony describes the CFI-2200B02S as a Japan-use-only model. The console must be set to Japanese, and the PlayStation account used with it must have Japan as its country or region. Buyers outside Japan should not assume they can use it with their existing console language or account settings. Sony has not announced availability in other markets.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the Midnight Black model includes
The console is a digital edition with an 825GB SSD. Sony notes that system software uses some of that capacity, leaving less available for games and other user data. The package includes one DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal feet, an HDMI cable, a power cable, a USB cable, printed materials, and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM preinstalled. A vertical stand is sold separately.
Sony says the model retains the PS5’s high-speed SSD, 3D audio, PS4 backward compatibility, and DualSense controller features, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Some PS4 games may not be compatible. Downloaded games require internet access and a PlayStation account, and software updates may be needed.

Can it play physical game discs?
Not as sold: the console has no disc drive in the box. Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1J01 Midnight Black Disc Drive can be attached to play packaged games. Sony says pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection. The drive costs ¥11,980 including tax, bringing the announced console-and-drive price to ¥66,980 before any retailer-specific charges or discounts.

For a buyer in Japan, the central choice is whether the language and account restrictions fit, whether physical discs are needed, and whether the optional drive is worth the added cost. Buyers should also check local retailer availability and pricing rather than treating Sony’s Japan-market prices as applicable elsewhere.

Sony previously offered Midnight Black covers for the slim PS5. The cover announced in January 2024, model CFI-ZCS2G01, was specified for the CFI-2000 slim model group and not the older CFI-1000 group. Those covers are cosmetic accessories, not this newly announced CFI-2200B02S console. Sony has not confirmed that earlier covers fit the new model, so check compatibility before buying a cover.
