Roblox reported more than 176.3 million hours of gameplay in 2012, a 50% increase over 2011. The figure comes from the company’s January 22, 2013 announcement and counts time attributed to both builders and players—not distinct users or a player-only total.
What Roblox’s 176.3 million-hour figure measures
In its January 22, 2013 announcement, Roblox said builders and players spent over 176.3 million hours in gameplay during calendar year 2012. The company described this as 50% more than in 2011. The announcement is the source of the figure; it does not present it as an independently audited measurement. Read Roblox’s announcement, reproduced by GlobeNewswire.
That total is accumulated gameplay time, not a count of people. It should also not be recast as time played solely by users in games: Roblox’s wording includes both builders and players.
Other Roblox activity figures from 2012
The same release reported several different measures of activity. They describe the scale of Roblox’s user-created-games ecosystem, but they are not interchangeable with gameplay hours.

| Measure | Roblox-reported figure | Period and meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Games reaching at least one million plays | 149 games | Calendar year 2012 |
| Games topping 10 million plays | 4 games | Calendar year 2012 |
| Page views | 13.3 billion | Calendar year 2012 |
| Site visits | 685 million | Calendar year 2012 |
| Unique visitors | 11.5 million | December 2012 |
Plays count game activity, page views and visits describe website traffic, and unique visitors refer to people visiting during a specified period. None of those numbers is another way of stating the 176.3 million gameplay hours.
What the release said about Roblox’s economy and mobile launch
Roblox also reported that 17.6 billion Robux changed hands in 2012, which the company equated to $176 million USD. That comparison refers to virtual currency transactions in Roblox’s economy; it should not be read as $176 million in cash purchases.

The announcement said Roblox Mobile had been available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch since its July launch, and reported more than 250,000 downloads by early 2013. At the time, Roblox described mobile users as able to discover and play user-created levels, browse models, and purchase avatar clothing. Those details describe the product in that period, not necessarily its current features.
Roblox CEO David Baszucki said in the announcement: “Our community’s commitment to building, sharing, and playing on ROBLOX is evolving in spectacular ways, and these 2012 numbers show how exciting and engaging user-created content can be for desktop and now mobile experiences.”
