There is no announced end date for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 release schedule still lists original Switch games through 2027, but that does not guarantee releases or support through any particular year. Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so it is already Nintendo’s successor; whether to upgrade now depends on the games you want and whether your current library and accessories work on the new system.
Has Nintendo announced when the original Switch will end?
No. The Nintendo statements and schedules available here do not give a universal final date for original Switch games, hardware sales, repairs, system updates, or online services. Nintendo said in its May 8, 2025 FY2025 results that it would continue Switch hardware sales while considering consumer demand and business conditions. That is a conditional statement about sales at the time, not a promised sales period or a shutdown date: Nintendo FY2025 financial results.
In June 2025, Nintendo described Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch and announced its launch for June 5, 2025. The successor’s arrival marks a platform transition, but it does not by itself set an end date for the original console: Nintendo’s FY2025 results and Switch 2 announcement.
What Nintendo’s release schedule tells us
Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 schedule includes original Switch software alongside Switch 2 releases. It lists Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for April 16, 2026, Rhythm Heaven Groove for July 16, 2026, and Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves for 2027. The schedule warns that titles and dates may change and that release dates may differ by region, so treat these as listed plans rather than guarantees: Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 product schedule.

Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder materials also said the company planned to release original Switch titles in late 2025 and to maintain engagement with new titles alongside existing games. That records the plan at that time; it does not promise a minimum remaining lifespan: Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder materials.
Does a system update or security date set a shutdown deadline?
No. Nintendo Japan’s Switch system-update history includes updates in 2026, evidence that firmware updates continued during that period—not a schedule for games, eShop purchases, repairs, or online services: Nintendo Switch system software updates.

Nintendo Australia’s security page says Switch 2 security updates will be provided until at least September 10, 2028, in Australia. The page explicitly says its security-update information is not a guarantee of online-service availability. It concerns Switch 2 security updates, not the original Switch’s lifespan: Nintendo Australia Product Security.
Should you keep using your Switch or upgrade?
There is no announced universal deadline that forces an upgrade. Base the choice on what you want to play, and check compatibility rather than assuming every game or accessory transfers.

- Keep your original Switch if its library meets your needs and you are content with the releases available or currently scheduled for it. A schedule is not a guarantee that every listed game will arrive as planned.
- Consider Switch 2 if you want games exclusive to that system. Nintendo says Switch 2 can also play Switch games, but some may not be supported or fully compatible; check the title-specific compatibility information before buying or moving over: Nintendo Support: Can I Play Nintendo Switch Games on Nintendo Switch 2?
- Check accessories individually. Nintendo identifies some original Switch items that cannot be used with Switch 2, including the original Switch dock. Original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly in specified circumstances. Consult Nintendo’s compatibility details for the specific item: Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 compatibility.
What can—and cannot—be said about the remaining time?
The original Switch remains usable for its library, and Nintendo’s published schedule includes original Switch releases extending into 2027. Those facts establish ongoing activity, not how many years remain. Nintendo has not published a general end date in the statements and schedules cited here, so a claim that support ends in a particular year would go beyond what they establish.
