If the console displays a high-temperature sleep warning or keeps getting unusually hot, check its surroundings and vents, let it cool, and contact Nintendo service if the problem continues.
When is a warm Switch normal?
Nintendo says the console may get hot during charging or use, including in Sleep Mode, and that this alone is not a defect. Its guidance applies to Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. The cited answer is on Nintendo’s Philippines support site and does not state a publication date: Nintendo’s answer to “My console gets hot. Is it broken?”.
Warmth is different from a high-temperature warning or heat that persists after you improve airflow and let the system cool. There is no component-temperature threshold in Nintendo’s cited guidance for deciding at home that a console is overheating.
Six safe checks to try

Move the console to a suitable temperature
Nintendo recommends using the console in a surrounding temperature of 5–35 °C. Move it away from direct heat, a hot room, or any spot where heat collects. This range is from Nintendo’s support page; the page does not state a publication date: temperature and heat guidance.

Clear space around the air intake and vent
Leave at least 10 cm around the intake and vent, and make sure air can move freely. Do not cover the vents while playing. Nintendo’s Americas safety guidance also warns against covering the console’s air intakes or vents: Nintendo Switch Health & Safety Precautions.

Remove visible dust from the vents
Nintendo recommends using a vacuum cleaner or similar to remove dust from the air intake or vent. A regular household vacuum is enough; the guidance does not call for a special accessory. Avoid inserting objects into the vents.

Respond to a high-temperature sleep warning
The console can automatically enter Sleep Mode when its temperature gets too high. If that happens, clear any obstruction or dust from the vents and let the console cool sufficiently before using it again. Check whether heat continues after cooling
Once the console has cooled, use it in the recommended temperature range with the vents unobstructed. If a warning returns or the heat remains concerning despite these checks, stop using it and contact Nintendo customer service. Troubleshooting and service routing are available through Nintendo’s system or accessory troubleshooting page.

Do not open the console to investigate
Nintendo’s safety guidance says not to disassemble the console or attempt repairs. If the basic checks do not resolve the problem, use Nintendo service rather than trying to replace a fan or repair internal parts. Service options and warranty terms can vary by region.
Why you should avoid prolonged contact with a hot console
Nintendo cautions that prolonged skin contact with a hot area can cause a low-temperature burn. If the system feels very hot, set it aside safely and let it cool rather than holding or playing with it.
