Control Resonant takes the series beyond the Oldest House and into a transformed Manhattan. Director Mikael Kasurinen has named Neon Genesis Evangelion as a major influence—not as a story the game adapts, but as a reference for its strange threats, besieged city and characters struggling under impossible pressure.
What is the connection between Control Resonant and Evangelion?
Kasurinen has described Evangelion as an important influence on Control Resonant. In a May 25, 2026 interview with Omelete, he connected the anime to a city repeatedly devastated by outside forces, the effort to defend it, and enemies whose appearance and nature are difficult to understand. In a separate VGC interview report, he discussed its narrative influence: a young protagonist burdened by responsibility, failing in different ways as other people try to support him.
Kasurinen also singled out Evangelion’s unusual blend of religion and science fiction. That combination fits the kind of unsettling, hard-to-categorize world the Control series is known for, but the interviews establish an influence, not a direct translation of characters, plot points or creatures. Control Resonant is not described as an official crossover or licensed collaboration.
How does that influence show up in the game’s setting?
The contrast is clearest in the move from the Oldest House to Manhattan. An early Engadget preview describes the sequel as set seven years after Control: the Hiss are spreading through Manhattan, Jesse Faden is missing, and her brother Dylan is sent into the city to confront the threat. Those are preview-era story details, rather than a guarantee that every element remains unchanged in the released game.

In Kasurinen’s account, the Evangelion-like resonance is not simply “a city under attack.” It is the combination of a threatened urban environment, extraordinary enemies, and the human burden of resisting them. The premise gives Resonant room to explore that combination while remaining a story about the Faden family and the Hiss.
What changes about exploration and combat?
Preview coverage points to a broader, more action-oriented sequel, but not a full open-world game. Engadget described exploration as more open-ended than in the first Control while noting that developers did not call it open world. In a June 22, 2026 Space hands-on preview, lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos described traversal through a transformed Manhattan that uses rooftops, with the city remaining more contained than an open-world version of New York.

- A new frontier of the real Grade series begins with the introduction of the multipurpose humanoid decisive weapon, artificial human Evangelion
- Rg Evangelion features intricate linked parts construction to represent the relaxation and contraction of muscle fibers resulting in a very close emulation of human-joints
- The Movement of the spine and shoulder blades are linked to the Armor parts and follow the movement of the arms and chest
- Product bears official Bluefin logo
Combat also shifts toward close-range action. Space’s preview describes Dylan’s shape-shifting weapon, the Aberrant, changing into forms that include dual swords, an axe and a scythe. That makes the sequel’s combat direction more melee-forward than the original’s gun-centered action. It is a preview description, not a full accounting of every final-game weapon or mechanic.
The resulting design distinction is useful: Resonant appears to pair a larger, alien city with contained exploration and a different combat emphasis, rather than simply scaling up the Oldest House or turning Manhattan into a conventional open world. Preview coverage supports that broad direction; it does not establish the final game’s complete map structure or systems.
