In video games, controls are the inputs and bindings a player uses to make a game character or system respond: pressing a button, moving a stick, clicking a mouse, or entering a keyboard command. The title “Controls” is ambiguous, however, and the available authoritative definitions concern engineering systems and information-security safeguards—not video-game input schemes. Those are different subjects, so this article does not treat either as a verified definition of game controls.
What “controls” can mean
The word has different meanings depending on the field. In engineering, control is the deliberate regulation of a system’s behavior toward a desired value. NIST defines a control system as “A system in which deliberate guidance or manipulation is used to achieve a prescribed value for a variable.” NIST’s control-system glossary attributes that definition to Special Publication 800-82 Revision 3. IEEE’s Control Systems Society similarly says that control governs or regulates how a system behaves or functions, and gives everyday examples including air conditioners, refrigerators, automobiles, and aircraft. In industrial settings, an industrial control system is used to control processes such as manufacturing, product handling, production, or distribution. NIST names supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), distributed control systems (DCS), and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) as examples; these are industrial-system categories, not types of video-game controller. In information security and privacy, a control is instead a requirement or safeguard applied to information systems and risk. NIST’s OSCAL terminology describes controls as requirements that can be organized into catalogs and used to create tailored baselines. NIST OSCAL terminology

How to read a video-game “Controls” page
A game menu labeled “Controls” usually concerns the mapping between player inputs and in-game actions—for example, which key moves a character or which button jumps. The sources cited here do not establish the layout, customization options, accessibility features, or recommended settings for any particular game. For those details, consult that game’s own menu, manual, or support documentation.
