How NFL Injury Reports and Practice Participation Designations Work

NFL injury reports separate practice workload from expected game availability. Here’s what DNP, Limited, Full, Out, Doubtful, and Questionable mean and when reports are filed.

NFL injury reports use two different sets of labels: DNP, Limited, and Full describe practice participation, while Out, Doubtful, and Questionable describe expected availability for the upcoming game. Neither practice participation nor a game-status label is a medical diagnosis, and availability can change when a club files an update.

Practice participation and game status are different fields

The NFL’s Practice Report records injury information and how much of a player’s normal practice work he completed. The Game Status Report separately states the club’s designation for the upcoming game. The league displays these as distinct fields, so a player can have full practice participation and still be listed as Questionable or Doubtful.

Report field Designation Meaning
Practice participation Did Not Participate (DNP) The player did not participate in practice.
Practice participation Limited Participation The player completed less than 100% of his normal repetitions.
Practice participation Full Participation The player completed 100% of his normal repetitions.
Game status Out The player will not play.
Game status Doubtful The player is unlikely to participate.
Game status Questionable It is uncertain whether the player will play.

The NFL’s definitions of practice participation and game status are described in its injury-reporting explanation. “Normal repetitions” includes both individual drills and the team portion of practice. Appearing in one segment does not by itself establish that a player completed 100% of his normal work.

What Limited, Full, and DNP tell you

Limited Participation

Limited means the player took part in practice but completed less than all of his normal repetitions. It describes workload, not the player’s pain level, recovery, or likelihood of playing.

Full Participation

Full means the player completed all of his normal repetitions. It does not remove an injury from the report: NFL policy says a reportable injury must still be listed even when a player fully practices and the club expects him to play.

Did Not Participate

DNP means the player did not practice. It does not automatically mean he will miss the game; the game-status field is the separate indication of expected availability.

How to interpret the game-status labels

Out, Doubtful, and Questionable are qualitative designations, not published probability bands. Do not translate Questionable into an exact 50/50 chance or assign a fixed percentage to Doubtful. The NFL removed the Probable category in 2016, explaining that the label did not effectively flag uncertainty about availability. The league said about 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played; that is a historical figure cited in the 2016 announcement, not a prediction for today’s designations.

Practice participation and game status can appear to point in different directions because they answer different questions. The NFL’s Week 4 2025 report, for example, lists players with Full Participation alongside Doubtful or Questionable. A full practice therefore does not guarantee that a player will be available, and a missed or limited practice does not itself establish that he will be out.

Why an injury may remain on the report after full practice

Under the NFL’s 2017 injury-reporting policy, clubs must list reportable injuries even if a player completes all practice repetitions or is expected to play. The policy identifies injuries that cause a player to miss a game, leave a game or practice early, miss practice, or have limited practice participation as reportable. It also addresses injuries that can affect performance even when a player remains available and fully practices.

An injury designation should not be confused with a non-injury absence. The policy says a veteran held out for rest rather than injury should not receive an injury game-status designation merely because he did not practice; the report should identify the absence as not injury related.

How to read a player’s listing

  1. Check the report date and game week. Use the newest official NFL or club report, since designations can change.
  2. Read the injury or body-part field as written. It identifies the reported issue but is not enough to infer a diagnosis or prognosis.
  3. Compare each day’s participation separately. A trend from DNP to Limited to Full provides practice context, but it does not replace the game-status designation.
  4. Read the game-status field for expected availability. Treat Out, Doubtful, and Questionable according to their qualitative meanings, not as guaranteed outcomes or exact odds.

For example, Full Participation plus Questionable means the player completed his normal practice work but the club still designated game availability as uncertain. Limited plus Questionable combines a practice restriction with uncertain availability. DNP plus Out pairs a missed practice with an announced expectation that the player will not play. These combinations describe report fields; they do not establish a medical conclusion.

The policy also says that if a player appeared on the week’s practice report but is omitted from game status, the club is certain he will play; if that player is then inactive, the club must explain the discrepancy. It further requires a Questionable or Doubtful player who does not travel to a road game because of injury to be updated to Out. These policy examples are not substitutes for checking the latest listing in a live case.

When NFL teams release injury reports

There is no single filing day that applies to every game. The NFL’s 2026 Important Dates calendar sets practice-report days according to kickoff day. Reports are due by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. The calendar says dates are subject to change, so check the applicable week—especially for international, holiday, or rescheduled games.

Game day Practice-report days listed for 2026
Sunday Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Saturday Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Thursday Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

The calendar also sets a separate game-status filing day for each game day, with the same 4:00 p.m. New York-time deadline or filing as soon as possible after practice. Consult the calendar for the specific game rather than assuming the Sunday schedule applies.

Updates can change a player’s listed availability

The policy requires clubs to report a change in a player’s condition after the initial game-status filing. A designation is therefore a snapshot, not a final guarantee. When reporting current availability, use the latest official listing and identify its date and game week; an earlier report may no longer reflect the club’s position.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
