NFL practice designations describe how much a player practiced; they do not, by themselves, predict whether that player will play. The separate Game Status Report gives the club’s stated availability assessment: Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate, and Out means the player will not play. Read both reports and use the latest update.
What the practice designations mean
The Practice Report records a player’s activity during the week. Its participation labels are not game-day status labels and do not carry fixed odds of playing.
- Did Not Participate (DNP): The player did not practice. DNP describes that week’s practice activity; it does not, on its own, mean the player is ruled out.
- Limited Participation: The player completed less than 100 percent of normal repetitions. This indicates restricted practice activity, not a set chance of playing.
- Full Participation: The player completed 100 percent of normal repetitions. It is a positive practice signal, but the participation label alone is not a guarantee of playing.
The NFL says the Practice Report’s “Out” category was eliminated to avoid confusion with the separate Game Status Report. An injured player listed on a club’s practice report during the week but absent from its Game Status Report is considered certain to play under the league’s reporting policy. NFL policy revision.
What Questionable, Doubtful and Out mean
These are game-status designations: the club’s stated assessment of availability, not a statistical forecast for an individual player.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
The NFL’s policy definitions are qualitative; they do not assign a current numeric play probability to Questionable or Doubtful. Do not translate either label into a percentage. The NFL’s 2016 policy revision also noted that approximately 95 percent of players listed as “Probable” in prior years played in the game. That figure refers only to the former Probable category and is historical; it is not an estimate for today’s Questionable or Doubtful players, nor a prediction for any one player.
How to read both reports together
- Check whether missed or limited practice was injury-related. A veteran resting for reasons unrelated to injury should be identified as not injury-related; a missed practice alone does not establish an injury.
- Read the separate Game Status Report. Practice activity gives context about preparation, while the game-status label communicates the club’s stated availability assessment.
- Check when the report was issued and look for updates. If the player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report, the club must report an update. Use the latest available report rather than treating an earlier practice entry as the final answer. See the NFL’s 2026-27 important dates guidance.
In short, DNP, limited participation and full participation describe practice; Questionable, Doubtful and Out describe game status. Neither a practice label nor an earlier report should be mistaken for a guaranteed outcome if the club later updates the player’s condition.
