NFL teams can balance a two-way player’s workload by adjusting game snaps on each side of the ball, allocating practice and learning time by role, and responding to team needs and player availability. Jacksonville’s reported plan for Travis Hunter illustrates those choices, but the available reporting does not establish a league-wide formula or medical threshold.
What does “balancing” a two-way player’s workload involve?
It is not just a matter of dividing a player’s snaps evenly between offense and defense. A team can change how often the player appears in games, schedule on-field work for one role while preserving preparation for the other, and adjust the mix as its personnel needs change. Availability also matters: an injury can interrupt either role or both.
The evidence here concerns Jacksonville and Hunter, not a league-wide standard. It does not reveal a universal snap limit, a typical NFL split, or a medical formula for deciding how much a two-way player should work.
How did Jacksonville divide Hunter’s game snaps?
Two NFL.com reports give different totals for Hunter’s seven games in 2025. The figures should remain attributed to their respective reports rather than combined into one supposedly reconciled total.

| Report’s attribution | Offense | Defense | Other figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFL.com report | 324 snaps | 162 snaps | Seven games |
| Next Gen Stats, as reported by NFL.com | 305 snaps | 154 snaps | Three special-teams reps; season high of 81 snaps and average of 66 snaps per game, all across the reported seven games |
The reports point in the same broad direction—more offensive than defensive snaps in that stretch—but they do not provide matching counts. They also do not explain the discrepancy, so neither set should be presented as a reconciled official total.
How can teams manage practice and preparation?
Game usage is only one part of the workload. In a reported 2025 OTA session, Jacksonville coach Liam Coen said Hunter’s on-field assignment was offense rather than defense. Coen added that Hunter continued to attend defensive meetings and review defensive corrections. That is an example of separating on-field work from role-specific learning time; the report does not establish that the same schedule applied throughout the season.

Coen said of not assigning Hunter both sides in that session: “We won’t put him in that situation to have him do that, although I’m sure he’d probably want to.” The remark describes that practice decision, not a general NFL rule.
Why might a team shift the split?
Role allocation can change with the team’s needs and its view of where the player should contribute. Jacksonville general manager James Gladstone said the 2026 plan was for Hunter to remain on offense and defense, with an expected increase in cornerback usage: “He is set to play both sides of the ball.” Gladstone also said, “The piece that I think we can expect to see is actually an uptick in corner usage.”

Those comments establish the team’s stated direction at the time of the report, not the full reasoning behind its internal decisions or a guaranteed snap count. Hunter’s own preference is a separate matter: in a 2026 training-camp report, he said, “All of them. I can’t stay on the sideline.” That is his stated desire, not Jacksonville’s workload target.
How does availability affect the plan?
Hunter’s rookie season was interrupted after a knee injury that required surgery. That limited his availability, but the reporting does not establish that playing both ways caused the injury. It is therefore appropriate to describe availability as a practical constraint on workload, not to infer a causal injury risk from these reports.

What can this case tell us about NFL workload decisions?
Jacksonville’s reporting shows several levers a team can use: it can assign different snap shares by side, organize practice reps by role while maintaining preparation for the other role, and change the intended allocation as team needs evolve. A player’s availability sets a practical limit on what can be done.
It does not show that NFL teams follow one standard model. The reported figures cover one player and a limited stretch of games, and the two published snap totals do not match. The evidence supports a case study of Jacksonville’s choices—not a league-wide threshold, workload norm, or conclusion about the health effects of two-way play.
