Franchise leaderboards track goals, assists, and points as separate records, and regular-season totals should not be mixed with Stanley Cup Playoff totals. For current leaders, check the NHL’s official records site and note its scope and update date.
How goals, assists, and points relate
A goal is credited to the player who scores. An assist is a separate scoring credit awarded to a player involved in the goal. A player’s points are calculated by adding their goals and assists; points are not a third kind of scoring play.
For example, a player with 20 goals and 30 assists has 50 points. That arithmetic example is illustrative, not a franchise-record claim. The sources cited here establish the separate statistical categories, but do not provide the NHL’s current rulebook language for deciding when an assist is awarded.
What an NHL franchise record measures
Franchise record lists can compare goals, assists, or points, but those are different leaderboards. They also distinguish regular-season statistics from Stanley Cup Playoff statistics. When comparing players, use the same statistic and game type for both.

The NHL directs fans to Records.NHL.com for official League records, including skater, team, playoff, regular-season, and franchise records. Its sortable historical information is updated frequently, so treat a leader list as current only when you have checked the page and recorded the date.
A dated example: Detroit points leaders
An NHL Stats and Information snapshot published February 3, 2026, listed Gordie Howe with 1,809 points for Detroit and Steve Yzerman with 1,755. Those figures are an entering-2025-26 snapshot, not a live October 2026 ranking. Verify the current Detroit points list on Records.NHL.com before relying on it as up to date.
Why franchise history needs a scope note
A team’s present-day franchise history may involve relocation or predecessor clubs. Do not assume every current-name record page includes earlier team totals in the same way. Preserve any qualifier attached to the official record or team announcement.
For example, the Carolina Hurricanes described Eric Staal’s 322 goals, 453 assists, and 775 points as team records “since relocation” in its July 30, 2024 announcement. That qualifier is part of what the figures mean; it should not be dropped when repeating them.

How to verify a franchise leaderboard
- Open Records.NHL.com, the NHL’s official records site, and select the relevant franchise record page.
- Choose the statistic you need—goals, assists, or points—and confirm whether the page covers regular season or Stanley Cup Playoffs.
- Read any franchise-history qualifier, such as a relocation or predecessor-team limitation, and retain it in comparisons.
- Record the date you checked the page. A dated NHL Stats release or team announcement is a historical snapshot, not necessarily the current leaderboard.
Historical totals and corrections
Historical statistics have been reviewed and corrected over time. In an October 5, 2017 account of its historical database work, the NHL said it corrected games played for about 650 players, assists for 370, goals for 100, penalty minutes for 1,100, and shots on goal for 1,500. This documents historical record maintenance; it does not by itself show that current leaderboards are inaccurate. For a disputed total, use the current official record page and its stated scope.
