First-round winners stay in fixed halves of the bracket—there is no reseeding—and each semifinal is a best-of-five series. The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2 and, if needed, Game 5.
How teams qualify and get seeded
The eight teams with the best regular-season records qualify for the postseason. The WNBA ranks them from No. 1 to No. 8 league-wide, without separating teams by the Eastern and Western Conferences. The league’s 2026 postseason FAQ describes the current qualification and series format.
How the bracket is arranged
The first round uses four fixed matchups. Each series winner advances into a predetermined half of the bracket:
| First-round matchup | Where its winner goes |
|---|---|
| No. 1 vs. No. 8 | Semifinal against the winner of No. 4 vs. No. 5 |
| No. 4 vs. No. 5 | Semifinal against the winner of No. 1 vs. No. 8 |
| No. 3 vs. No. 6 | Semifinal against the winner of No. 2 vs. No. 7 |
| No. 2 vs. No. 7 | Semifinal against the winner of No. 3 vs. No. 6 |
The bracket does not reset after the first round. A team is not moved to face a different opponent based on its seed or a “highest seed versus lowest seed” rule; each semifinal pairs the winners of the two first-round series assigned to that half. The WNBA set out the fixed bracket and no-reseeding rule in its 2021 format announcement.

How many games are in a WNBA semifinal?
Each semifinal is best-of-five: the first team to win three games advances to the Finals. The home-court sequence is 2-2-1:
- Games 1 and 2: hosted by the higher-seeded team.
- Games 3 and 4: hosted by the lower-seeded team.
- Game 5, if necessary: hosted by the higher-seeded team.
A series can therefore end in three, four, or five games. The home sequence is separate from the length of the series: “best-of-five” describes how many wins are needed, while “2-2-1” describes where the games are played.

How the semifinals fit into the full postseason
The current postseason has three rounds. The first round is best-of-three, the semifinals are best-of-five, and the Finals are best-of-seven, according to the WNBA’s 2026 FAQ. The league announced the revised first-round and Finals formats for the 2025 season in its 2024 format announcement.
Round lengths and home schedules are easy to confuse. The current first round uses a 1-1-1 home sequence: the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3, and the lower seed hosts Game 2. The Finals use a 2-2-1-1-1 sequence, with the higher seed hosting Games 1, 2, 5, and 7. The semifinals remain best-of-five with the 2-2-1 sequence described above. Older pages may give a different first-round or Finals format because the changes took effect in 2025.

2026 semifinal example
The WNBA’s 2026 bracket page listed Atlanta Dream (No. 4) against New York Liberty (No. 8), and Golden State Valkyries (No. 2) against Las Vegas Aces (No. 3). These pairings follow the fixed bracket: Atlanta advanced from the 4/5 series and New York from 1/8; Golden State advanced from 2/7 and Las Vegas from 3/6. The official 2026 playoff bracket listed Game 1 as beginning October 4. Teams, results, dates, and broadcast details are specific to that season and should not be mistaken for permanent bracket rules.
