How Nintendo Says It Prices Its Games

Nintendo describes game pricing as a title-by-title decision shaped by regional conditions, development costs, file size, content and player value, without a public formula.

Nintendo says it sets software prices title by title, weighing regional conditions, consumer price expectations, and costs such as larger game files and longer development periods. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has also pointed to a game’s content and the amount of play it offers. Nintendo has not published a formula or disclosed how much weight it gives each factor.

What Nintendo says goes into a game’s price

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described the company’s approach in its 2025 financial-results Q&A: prices are considered for each title, with regional factors and software costs part of the evaluation. He said, “For software, in addition to the same factors, we also take into account rises in costs, due to aspects such as increased game file size and extended development periods, when determining price.” Nintendo’s fiscal year ended March 2025 financial-results briefing does not state a fixed benchmark or show how those factors are weighted.

Regional conditions and consumer expectations

Furukawa said Nintendo evaluates prices in each region. In discussing Switch 2 hardware, he named manufacturing cost, consumer impressions of the price, exchange-rate differences compared with the original Switch launch, and regional market conditions. He said regional factors also apply to software. The statement describes considerations, not a complete list of software-specific rules or a method for converting one region’s price into another’s.

Development and file-size costs

For software, Nintendo specifically cited increased game file sizes and extended development periods as sources of rising costs. Furukawa said the company would continue considering an appropriate price for each title. Nintendo has not disclosed a cost calculation that would let players infer a game’s retail price from its development time or download size.

Content and play experience

In a 2025 interview about Mario Kart World, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said the company considers a game’s content and the extended amount of play its gameplay experience provides, alongside other factors. That is Bowser’s explanation of the company’s thinking, not a published pricing formula. The interview’s discussion of an $80 price was specific to that conversation and is not evidence of a current, universal Nintendo game price. The Washington Post interview with Bowser

How Nintendo describes value and affordability

At Nintendo’s 2025 annual shareholder meeting, Furukawa said the company believes Switch 2 is priced appropriately for the gaming experience it offers. He said Nintendo wants to provide entertaining experiences that demonstrate value to consumers, while monitoring whether the system’s price could become a barrier for young consumers. His comments explain the company’s stated aims; they do not establish a numerical affordability threshold or a specific discount policy. Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder Q&A

Why the answer is not a simple price formula

Nintendo’s public explanations identify factors but do not provide their relative weights, a standard price by game type, or a rule that players can use to predict a new release’s price. Two games can differ in content, development costs, region, and the context in which their prices are set; Nintendo has not said that any one of those factors determines the result on its own.

When comparing two games, treat the company’s comments as context rather than proof of why their prices differ. A careful comparison can note the game experience Bowser described, the development and file-size costs Furukawa named, the market in which a price applies, and when that price was quoted. Those points do not reveal Nintendo’s internal calculation or verify today’s retail price.

How physical and digital distribution fit into the history

Nintendo’s 2013 explanation offers historical context, not a statement of current policy. Then-president Satoru Iwata said that packaged games sold through physical distribution had to account for physical costs and margins for distributors and retailers, which limited pricing flexibility. He also discussed Nintendo’s experiments with digital pricing and marketing at the time. Those remarks should not be treated as a current rule for every physical or digital game.
