Offset Attacks and Power Clashes both interrupt certain monster attacks and can create an opening, but they start in different ways: an Offset Attack is a weapon move timed to collide with an eligible attack, while a Power Clash can begin when you guard one. Neither mechanic applies to every monster attack, and which actions are available depends on your weapon.
How do Offset Attacks work?
An Offset Attack is a specific weapon move with an offset property—not just any hit or counter. Use it as an eligible monster attack arrives. If the timing and move are right, the exchange cancels the monster’s attack, you avoid damage from that exchange, and the monster is knocked off balance so you can follow up. Gameconductor’s weapon guides describe the timing commitment and the risk of mistiming: if the move misses the window, you can be hit.
Offset properties are weapon-specific, and the reviewed official overview does not provide a complete list of qualifying moves or their inputs. Check your weapon’s current in-game controls for the relevant move rather than assuming every weapon—or every counter—can offset. Controls and move properties may vary with platform, control layout, and game updates.
How do Power Clashes work?
A Power Clash starts with a guard, not an attacking move. When you block certain monster attacks with a weapon that can guard, a struggle may begin. Winning pushes the monster back or leaves it off balance, giving you an opening to attack. A block does not guarantee a clash; the attack and weapon must qualify.

The Red Gauge combat guide distinguishes guarding, Perfect Guard, clashes, and offsets. Treat a Power Clash as its own guard-triggered event, rather than another name for a Perfect Guard or an Offset Attack.
Offset Attack vs. Power Clash
| What to compare | Offset Attack | Power Clash |
|---|---|---|
| What starts it | A weapon move with an offset property meets an eligible monster attack. | You guard a qualifying monster attack with a weapon that can guard. |
| What you time | A specific attacking move against the incoming attack. | A guard against the incoming attack; a struggle follows if the attack qualifies. |
| Weapon access | Limited to moves with an offset property; not every weapon move qualifies. | Requires a weapon capable of guarding; access depends on weapon type. |
| On success | The exchange is canceled, you avoid damage from it, and the monster is knocked off balance for a follow-up. | The monster is pushed back or left off balance, creating an attack opening. |
| Main risk | Mistiming the move can leave you open to a hit. | Not every block triggers a clash. |
Which weapons and attacks qualify?
Weapon type determines which guarding and offset actions you can use. The official PlayStation overview lists 14 weapon categories and describes both mechanics, but does not provide a full current input chart. The available descriptions also limit both mechanics to certain or eligible monster attacks; they do not establish that any particular attack can always be offset or clashed.
For exact move names and button inputs, consult the current in-game controls for your weapon and platform. The mechanics are clear at a high level, but these sources do not establish a complete, update-specific control guide for all weapons.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between them in a fight
- If your weapon has an offset move, use it when you can deliberately time that attack to meet an eligible monster attack. It offers a direct interruption and follow-up, but a mistimed commitment can be punished.
- If your weapon can guard, block qualifying attacks and be ready for a Power Clash if one begins. Do not expect every successful block to produce one.
These mechanics reward different reads: Offset asks you to meet the attack with a particular offensive move; Power Clash asks you to guard it. The sources establish no universal damage or strength ranking between them.
