How Often Should You Restart Your Minecraft Server?

Restart most Minecraft servers once every 24 hours during a quiet maintenance window. Heavy Java servers may need 6–12-hour restarts temporarily, but memory graphs, TPS/MSPT, GC behavior, and logs should determine the schedule.

For most Minecraft servers, restart once every 24 hours during off-peak time, such as 4 a.m. local time. Warn players first and monitor the result for a week. If a busy or heavily modded Java server develops recurring garbage-collection pauses or memory-related crashes, a 6–12-hour schedule may be reasonable. Do not restart simply because a memory meter looks high: on Paper, that can be normal JVM behavior, and restarts will not repair an overloaded CPU, an expensive plugin, a leaking mod, or an inefficient build.

The practical default: one planned restart per day

There is no restart interval mandated by Mojang, Microsoft, or PaperMC. A daily restart is a hosting and community convention rather than an official Minecraft requirement. It gives the Java Virtual Machine a clean process start, applies changes that require a full stop, and limits the time a temporary leak or runaway task can accumulate.

Schedule the restart when few people are online. Many administrators choose around 4 a.m. in the server’s local time zone, but the correct hour is the quietest reliable maintenance window for your players. Send an in-game warning several minutes beforehand, save normally, stop the server cleanly, and bring it back only after the process has exited.

Situation Starting cadence When to change it
Small vanilla or lightly modded Java server Every 24 hours, overnight Keep this schedule if TPS, MSPT, logs, and player reports remain healthy.
Busy or heavily modded Java server Every 12 hours Use only when degradation reliably returns within a day and no specific cause has been fixed.
Very heavy Java workload with recurring GC trouble Every 6 hours as a temporary measure Profile and repair the underlying problem; frequent restarts are not a permanent cure.
Bedrock Dedicated Server No evidence-based universal interval Restart for configuration or plugin changes, crashes, maintenance, or a repeatable operational issue.

The 6–12-hour range is a practical escalation, not a published Minecraft standard. Akliz guidance commonly cited by server operators recommends at least every 12 hours for Minecraft 1.7.10 and older, and every 6 hours for 1.8 and newer. Treat those version-based intervals as provider advice, not as a rule from Mojang or PaperMC.

What a restart can—and cannot—fix

What it can temporarily clear

  • A Java process that has accumulated temporary objects or entered an unhealthy garbage-collection pattern.
  • A plugin or mod task that is consuming resources but releases them when the process starts again.
  • Changes that are read only at startup, including many server, plugin, and mod settings.
  • A process left in a degraded state after a crash, failed reload, or unusually long event.

What it does not repair

  • An undersized CPU, insufficient single-thread performance, or too many simultaneous entities and redstone updates.
  • A plugin, mod, datapack, or command system that repeatedly performs expensive work.
  • Large or poorly optimized builds that generate excessive block updates, pathfinding, or chunk activity.
  • A memory leak: the next process will eventually leak again unless the faulty component is found and updated, removed, or configured.

If the server is slow again shortly after every restart, the schedule is masking a fault. Use the restart as a controlled observation point, not as the diagnosis.

Java and Paper: interpret memory correctly

PaperMC troubleshooting documentation explains that high heap use is normally expected unless the server is suffering out-of-memory crashes or unusually bad garbage-collection times. The Java heap commonly forms a sawtooth pattern: usage rises, garbage collection reclaims part of it, and usage rises again. The JVM also commonly keeps committed heap memory instead of returning it to the operating system, so a monitoring panel can show a high or nearly flat value even while the server is healthy.

Restart when you have evidence of an actual memory problem, such as an out-of-memory crash, long or increasingly frequent GC pauses, or a clear decline that disappears after a restart and then returns. A high percentage by itself is not a trigger.

A user report describing continuous garbage collection and temporary improvement after restarting is useful as a symptom pattern, but it is not official guidance and does not identify the cause. Plugins and mods should be investigated rather than assuming the restart interval is the solution.

How to decide whether lag justifies a shorter schedule

1. Check TPS and MSPT

On a Java server, compare the server’s ticks per second (TPS) and milliseconds per tick (MSPT) before and after a restart. Stable TPS near the normal target and comfortably low MSPT indicate that a restart is probably unnecessary. A rising MSPT shows that each tick is taking longer; that points toward workload, plugin, mod, entity, or hardware investigation.

2. Read the log, not only the player chat

Repeated Can't keep up! warnings indicate that the server is falling behind real time. Record when they begin, what players were doing, and whether they correlate with a scheduled task, a world area, a backup, or a specific plugin. One warning during a world save is different from continuous warnings during normal play.

3. Profile with spark

The spark profiler can identify which tasks, plugins, or game systems consume tick time. Capture a profile while the problem is occurring, then compare it with a quiet period. A restart that makes the profile look normal only proves that the condition was cleared temporarily; it does not prove that the restart frequency is correct.

4. Watch for repeatability

Keep a simple maintenance log for about a week: restart time, online player count, TPS, MSPT, GC behavior, warnings, crashes, and notable events. If degradation appears at a predictable age, a temporary 12-hour schedule can reduce disruption while you isolate the cause. If no pattern appears, do not shorten the interval just because the server has been running for a certain number of hours.

Bedrock Dedicated Server needs a different approach

Bedrock Dedicated Server does not expose the same startup or maximum-memory tuning values used by Java servers. The Minecraft Wiki documents that there are no memory values to specify at startup. Consequently, Java-style heap thresholds and Paper-specific garbage-collection advice cannot be transferred directly to Bedrock.

Bedrock’s /reload command cannot fully reload the server. Configuration or plugin changes that require a process restart must be applied by stopping the server and running the executable again. Microsoft Learn’s getting-started guidance describes stopping from the console with the stop command and restarting by running the server executable again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because no authoritative Bedrock restart interval has been established, use an event-driven policy: restart for startup-only changes, a crash, a repeatable stuck state, or planned maintenance. A daily overnight restart is reasonable if it fits your community, but it should be treated as an operational choice rather than a Bedrock requirement.

Timed versus event-driven restart policies

Policy Advantages Risks Best fit
Daily timed restart Predictable maintenance; limits the lifetime of temporary degradation; easy to announce. Can hide leaks and interrupt players unnecessarily. Most small and medium servers.
Every 6–12 hours Reduces the impact of a problem that returns within one day. More interruptions and stronger risk of masking the root cause. Heavy Java workloads while profiling an unresolved issue.
Event-driven only Fewest planned interruptions; restart is tied to evidence. Requires monitoring and a reliable operator response. Stable servers with good observability, or Bedrock installations without a known cadence.

A hybrid policy is usually strongest: keep one nightly restart, add an emergency restart for a crash or severe GC failure, and remove the emergency condition once the underlying component is repaired.

A safe restart procedure

  1. Choose the window. Use the lowest-traffic period and account for the time zone of your regular players.
  2. Announce it. Give a clear warning in chat and, if available, through your community notification channel. State the exact restart time and expected downtime.
  3. Stop cleanly. Use the server console’s stop command rather than killing the process. This allows worlds and player data to save normally. On Bedrock, the same console stop approach is documented for the dedicated server.
  4. Wait for exit. Confirm that the process has finished and that no second server instance is still using the world files.
  5. Start the server again. For Bedrock this means running the dedicated-server executable again; Java installations likewise use their normal launch method.
  6. Verify before reopening. Check that worlds load, plugins or mods initialize without errors, the port is reachable, and players can join. Review the first minutes of console output.
  7. Record the result. Note startup duration, errors, TPS or MSPT, memory and GC behavior, and whether the original symptom returned.

Never make a forced termination the normal schedule. It can interrupt saves and create a data-loss risk that a clean stop is designed to avoid.

Common scheduling mistakes

  • Restarting on a fixed timer without measuring: a timer cannot identify which plugin, mod, or workload causes lag.
  • Treating a full memory graph as proof of a leak: Java’s retained heap can look full while garbage collection remains healthy.
  • Using a Java remedy on Bedrock: Bedrock has different memory controls and reload behavior.
  • Restarting during peak play: an avoidable interruption creates more harm than a quiet maintenance window.
  • Skipping warnings and clean shutdowns: players lose work and operators lose useful evidence about when the fault began.
  • Keeping a short cadence forever: if six-hour restarts are still required after profiling, the server needs a component, configuration, or hardware fix.

A decision rule you can apply today

  1. Start with one clean restart per night during off-peak hours.
  2. Observe TPS or MSPT, logs, GC pauses, crashes, and player reports for roughly one week.
  3. Keep the daily schedule if performance remains stable.
  4. If degradation reliably returns within 12 hours, move temporarily to two restarts per day while using spark and logs to locate the cause.
  5. Consider a six-hour interval only for a genuinely heavy Java workload with recurring, documented GC trouble and no immediate fix.
  6. Return to a longer interval—or to event-driven restarts—once the plugin, mod, workload, or hardware issue has been corrected.
