Enshrouded does not use one universal administrator password. Admin access is granted through the Admin object in the userGroups array of enshrouded_server.json. Set a password for that group, make sure its permission flags are enabled, restart the server, and give that password only to the people who should have admin rights. On a rented server, use the host’s panel when possible because panel startup settings can overwrite manual file edits.

How Enshrouded’s admin system works
Every player joins through a user group. A group has a name, a password, permission flags and, optionally, reserved slots. The password does not merely let somebody connect: it determines which group’s permissions that player receives. Entering the Admin group password therefore gives the player the permissions enabled on the Admin entry.

There is no separate in-game command that turns a player into an administrator, and changing a player’s Steam name or character does not grant permissions.
What you need before changing the file
- Access to the server folder through a local file browser, SFTP, a control-panel file manager or an equivalent method.
- Permission to stop and start the dedicated server.
- A text editor that does not add rich-text formatting or “smart” quotation marks.
- A long, unique Admin password that is not used for your hosting account, Steam account or another service.
- A backup copy of the existing
enshrouded_server.jsonbefore making changes.
If a hosting provider supplies a Settings or Startup page for userGroups, read that panel’s instructions first. Some panels regenerate the JSON file when the server starts, so a correct manual edit can disappear after a restart if the panel still contains older values.

Self-hosted or file-editable servers: add an Admin password
- Stop the server. Use the stop button in your panel or stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Editing a file while the server is writing it can discard your changes or leave a partial file.
- Open the server directory. Locate
enshrouded_server.json. The exact directory depends on how the server was installed, so search the folder that contains the dedicated-server executable and its configuration files. - Make a backup. Copy the file to a separate name such as
enshrouded_server.json.backup. Keep the original content until you have successfully joined with the new permissions. - Find
userGroups. The default file generated by the server includes an Admin entry. Do not create a second top-level password field in an attempt to replace it; the group entry is what controls the access tier. - Inspect the Admin object. Confirm that the object is actually named
Adminin your generated file. Guides show different default group lists, so do not assume that every installation contains exactly the same Guest, Visitor or Everyone entries. - Set the password. Replace the placeholder value in the Admin object with a long password known only to administrators. Keep the quotation marks around the value and do not add an extra comma after the final property.
- Check permission flags. Enable the capabilities you intend to grant. A guide’s full-access example sets the Admin permissions to
true; your version may expose a slightly different set of properties. - Validate the JSON. A missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace or a curly quotation mark can make the server ignore the group configuration. Use a local JSON validator or your editor’s JSON diagnostics, then check the file again by eye.
- Save and start the server. Start the dedicated server only after the file validates. Watch the startup log or panel for a configuration error before inviting other players.
- Join with the Admin password. Connect using the normal server join flow and enter the password assigned to the Admin group. Test one administrative action before distributing the password.
Example Admin entry
The following is a pattern, not a promise that every game version uses identical fields. Copy the structure from your own generated file and change only the values you need.

If a property is absent from the file generated by your server, do not invent a spelling for it; compare the existing schema and verify the field against the game version you are running.
Permission flags explained
The names below are the flags described by current server guides. Their exact defaults are version-dependent, so treat the values in your generated file as authoritative.

Setting every available Admin flag to true creates a full-access group, but that is not always the safest arrangement. A person who only needs to remove disruptive players does not necessarily need inventory or base-editing rights.
Give admin access to a friend
The simplest method is to give the friend the Admin group password and have them enter it when joining. Everyone who knows that password receives the same Admin permissions, so do not reuse it for guests or publish it in a public chat.
After the friend connects, test a harmless administrative action together. If the action fails, stop and check that the friend entered the Admin password rather than a Friend, Guest or other group password. A player who joined with a lower-tier password cannot be upgraded by changing their in-game name; they must reconnect using the correct group password.

Create a limited moderator group
You can keep full Admin rights restricted while creating a separate group for moderation, provided your server version accepts custom group objects. A typical design is a moderator group with canKickBan enabled and base or inventory permissions disabled. Give that group its own password, name and flags.
Do not duplicate an object carelessly. Each group should have a distinct name and password, and the JSON commas and brackets must remain valid. Because custom-group field support and defaults are not documented by the developer in the available material, make a backup and test the new group with a non-critical account before relying on it for live moderation.
Hosted servers and control panels
On a rented server, the safest location for the setting is usually the provider’s configuration panel. Look for a Settings, Configuration or Startup section containing userGroups, an Admin password field or a password field associated with the Admin entry.

- Stop the server from the hosting panel.
- Open the panel’s server settings rather than editing a downloaded copy first.
- Enter the desired Admin password in the field associated with the Admin group.
- Save the settings and restart the server.
- Join with that password and verify an administrative permission.
Some providers expose the whole JSON file in a file manager; others expose only individual fields. If both are available, prefer the panel’s documented field and use the file manager to confirm the resulting value after a restart. Panel-managed startup values may rewrite the file at boot, which is why an edit that appears correct before restarting can revert afterward.

The exact behavior is provider-specific: clearing a field may remove the group, disable its password or cause the panel to regenerate a default entry. Confirm the resulting userGroups data after saving instead of assuming that a blank field has one universal meaning.
Why the top-level password can be misleading
A guide reports that the top-level password line is no longer used for dedicated-server passwords since Update 2, with group passwords in userGroups taking over that role. The update detail and the precise version behavior are not confirmed by developer documentation in the available material. For a current server, set the password on the intended group and test it after a restart; do not rely on an old tutorial that changes only a top-level password.

If your file contains both a top-level password and group passwords, leave unrelated settings intact and change the Admin group entry. Removing unknown keys can create a different configuration problem from the one you are trying to solve.
Common problems and fixes
The password is rejected
- Confirm that the server has restarted since the edit.
- Check that you changed the
passwordinside the Admin object, not a similarly named field elsewhere. - Make sure the friend is connecting to the same server instance whose file you edited.
- Check capitalization and invisible spaces in the password.
- If a panel is installed, inspect its Startup or Settings values; they may have restored an older password.
The player joins but has no admin powers
- Verify that the player entered the Admin password rather than another group’s password.
- Inspect the Admin flags and confirm that the needed property is set to
true. - Reconnect after the restart. A session created before the configuration change may still carry its previous group.
- Check whether the action you are testing requires a newer field such as
canEditWorld.
The server ignores the group settings
- Validate the complete JSON, including every comma, brace and quotation mark.
- Restore the backup if the server stopped loading after the edit, then reapply one change at a time.
- Ensure the file is named exactly
enshrouded_server.jsonand is in the server’s active directory. - On a hosted instance, check whether the panel generated a fresh file when the server started.
The Admin group is missing or the names differ
Guides show conflicting default lists: one describes Admin, Friend, Guest and Visitor; another describes Admin, Friend and Everyone; a third describes Admin, Friend and Guest. These differences may reflect game versions, host templates or edited files. Use the groups that your server actually generated. If no Admin object exists, make a backup and consult the host’s current template before adding a new object, because the expected schema is not fully documented by the developer.

Security practices for shared servers
- Use a password that is long and unique to this server.
- Send the Admin password privately and do not place it in a public community channel.
- Give full Admin access only to people who need every enabled capability.
- Use a separate, limited moderator group when moderation is the only requirement.
- Change the Admin password immediately when an administrator leaves the server or the password may have been exposed.
- After changing a password, restart the server and test with a trusted account before announcing the new value.
- Keep dated backups of the JSON file so you can recover from an invalid edit.

Final verification checklist
- The server is stopped while the file or panel setting is changed.
- A backup of the original configuration exists.
- The intended Admin object is inside

- The required permission flags are enabled.
- The JSON validates without syntax errors.
- The server has been restarted after saving.
- An administrator has joined with the Admin password and confirmed the expected capability.
- A hosting panel has not reverted the value during startup.
What to remember
To add an administrator, set the password on the Admin group in the server-generated enshrouded_server.json, confirm the group’s permission flags, validate the JSON, restart the server and have the player join with that group password. Treat the generated file as the source of truth for group names and fields, and use a host panel instead of a manual edit when the provider manages startup configuration.
