Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) is 13 years and 21 days old as of October 8, 2026. Rockstar Games announced its original release for September 17, 2013. Later versions arrived on other platforms, so their release dates are different.
When did GTA 5 first come out?
Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto V would arrive in stores on September 17, 2013. That is the date to use when asking how old the game is, regardless of which platform you play it on. Rockstar’s January 31, 2013 announcement gave the original date.
Counting from September 17, 2013 to October 8, 2026, GTA 5 is 13 years and 21 days old. That age is a calendar calculation from the release date, not a statistic published by Rockstar.
Why do some sources give a different release date?
GTA 5 launched on different platforms at different times. Those dates mark later versions, not a change to the original release date.

Which date should you use?
- “How old is GTA 5?” Use September 17, 2013, the original release date.
- “When did GTA 5 come out on my platform?” Use the date for that platform version in the timeline above.
- “How old is the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version?” Count from its March 15, 2022 release instead of the original debut.
Check the edition before buying
Release dates alone do not tell you what a store listing includes. Rockstar’s current store distinguishes a PS5 edition of GTA V that includes Story Mode and GTA Online from a separate standalone GTA Online listing.
