As of October 8, 2026, the PlayStation 4 is 12 years, 10 months, and 23 days old, counting from its first retail release in the United States and Canada on November 15, 2013. That makes it 12 years old in whole years. The PS4 launched on different dates in other regions.
How the PS4’s age is calculated
Sony’s North American launch announcement says the PlayStation 4 went on sale in the United States and Canada on November 15, 2013. From that date to October 8, 2026, 12 years, 10 months, and 23 days have elapsed. The calculation uses the first North American retail release as its baseline.
When did the PS4 launch in other regions?
The release date depended on location. Sony’s launch FAQ lists North America on November 15, 2013; PAL markets and Latin America on November 29, 2013; Asia regions in mid-December 2013; and Japan on February 22, 2014. Some PAL territories had later dates, so November 29 was not universal.
| Region | Launch timing |
|---|---|
| United States and Canada | November 15, 2013 |
| PAL markets and Latin America | November 29, 2013; some PAL territories later |
| Asia regions | Mid-December 2013 |
| Japan | February 22, 2014 |
These dates come from Sony’s North American PS4 launch FAQ; for the North American date, see Sony’s November 15, 2013 launch announcement.

Which PlayStation 4 is this referring to?
This age refers to the PS4 console generation, not a specific hardware revision or game. Sony’s original launch notice identifies the initial model as the CUH-1000A series, with a 500 GB hard disk drive. The console’s generation age is counted from its first retail release, even though individual models and regional releases came later.

Sony reported that more than 1 million PS4 units sold through in the first 24 hours in the United States and Canada. That is a launch-period figure for those two countries, announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 17, 2013—not a current lifetime-sales total. The original model and its storage specification are documented in Sony’s August 21, 2013 release notice; the launch-period sales figure appears in Sony’s November 17, 2013 sales announcement.
