After Overwatch 2’s February 2026 Competitive reset, players must complete 10 placement matches for each role to receive a rank in Role Queue or Open Queue. Placements are a calibration period: they determine a new starting rank, but Blizzard has not published a formula that lets players predict the result from a specific win-loss record or personal-stat line.
How many placement matches do you need?
Blizzard’s February 2026 patch notes say that Role Queue and Open Queue ranks were reset to Unranked and that players need to complete 10 placement matches for each role. That is a per-role requirement, not one shared set of 10 matches across every role.

The rule applies to the reset described in those notes; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every future season will use the same count. Blizzard also reported a soft reset to Hero Skill Ratings in that update.
What happens during placements?
Placements are used to determine a new starting rank after a reset. In Blizzard’s Season 9 explanation, the game showed a predicted starting rank after each placement match, with the matches determining the player’s new starting rank. That description is specific to the Season 9 update; the February 2026 notes confirm the match requirement but do not say whether the same predicted-rank display is still used.

What determines your starting rank?
The cited Blizzard explanations do not publish the detailed ranking formula. They establish that placements determine a starting rank, but they do not say that a particular number of wins, individual statistic, or hero choice guarantees a specific rank. Avoid relying on a fixed win target or a claimed personal-performance formula as if it were confirmed.

Overwatch 2’s launch-era competitive system used a different update cadence. Blizzard said players remained unranked until their first competitive update after seven wins or 20 losses. That older rule describes when a competitive update occurred in the 2022 system; it is not the placement-match count specified in the February 2026 reset notes.

- Games requires PlayStation Plus to play
For comparison, Blizzard’s Season 9 explanation in 2024 described 10 placement matches and predicted starting-rank updates after each match. Its February 2025 patch notes also described a reset to Unranked and 10 placements for each role. These dated updates show the rule in those resets, rather than establishing an unchanging rule for every season.
