Monthly Games and the Game Catalog are separate PlayStation Plus benefits. Monthly Games are a small, time-limited selection that you add to your library during the offer period; after you add one, you can download and play it whenever your PlayStation Plus membership is active. The Game Catalog is a larger, rotating collection that Extra and Premium members can choose from, but each title remains playable only while it stays in the catalog and your qualifying membership continues.
Downloading either type of game does not turn it into a permanent purchase. Your account records the subscription entitlement, not ownership of a perpetual game license.

Monthly Games versus the Game Catalog at a glance
| Comparison | Monthly Games | Game Catalog |
|---|---|---|
| How a game enters your account | Add it to your library during that month’s offer period. PlayStation support calls this area Monthly Games; players often call the action claiming or redeeming. | Select and add a title from the current catalog when it is available. |
| Eligible membership | Available with the PlayStation Plus tier that includes Monthly Games, including Essential, Extra and Premium on the US plan page. | Available to Extra and Premium members on the US plan page. |
| How long you can play | After you add the game, access continues while your PlayStation Plus membership is active. | Only while your membership includes the Game Catalog and the title has not left the service. |
| How the selection changes | A new selection is added every calendar month. | The library rotates. Titles can be added, updated or removed, sometimes with announced removal dates. |
| What happens after a cancellation | Games added through the benefit become unavailable until you renew an eligible membership. | Catalog games become unavailable if the membership ends or if the title leaves the catalog. A previous download does not preserve access. |
Both benefits are subscriptions rather than purchases. A game can appear in your account library and still be locked when the entitlement that supplied it is inactive.
How Monthly Games work
You must add each month’s games while they are offered
PlayStation adds Monthly Games every calendar month. To keep the entitlement, open the Monthly Games section on your PS5 or PS4, choose the title, and add it to your library during the stated offer period. You can then download it immediately or leave it in the library for a later installation. PlayStation’s support description is precise: these are games available to download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Adding a title is the important step. Merely seeing it on the Monthly Games page, downloading it, or having an active subscription during the month does not create a lasting subscription entitlement unless the game is added before the offer ends.
Claiming on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, open the PlayStation Plus area.
- Choose the Monthly Games section.
- Select a game in the current monthly selection and choose the option to add it to your library.
- Start the download, or leave the title in your library and install it later.
Labels can change with system software and region, but the feature is identified as Monthly Games. If a title shows a price rather than an add-to-library option, verify that you are signed into the subscribing account and that the offer period has not ended.
Claiming on PS4
- Open the PlayStation Plus section from the PS4 menu.
- Enter Monthly Games and select the current title.
- Add the game to your library before the monthly offer expires.
- Download it now or use your library later while your membership is active.
PlayStation has stated that PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That is a policy qualification, not a promise that every month will include a PS4 title, and availability can differ outside the United States.

Claiming remotely
You can also initiate a download with a web browser or the PlayStation App. Sign in to the account that holds the membership, open the Monthly Games listing, add the title to your library, and select the connected console for download when that option is offered. The console must be linked to the same account and configured to accept remote downloads; otherwise, add the game to the library and install it directly later.
What a successful claim means
A successful claim attaches a subscription entitlement to your account. It does not grant ownership after cancellation, and it does not protect the game from ordinary licensing restrictions. If your membership lapses, the game can remain listed in your library but will be unavailable to launch. Renewing an eligible PlayStation Plus membership restores access to previously added Monthly Games, provided the title is still supported on your account and platform.

How the Game Catalog works
It is a menu of currently available titles
The Game Catalog is a larger library from which eligible members choose individual games. Extra and Premium members can browse the catalog, open a title’s page, and download or stream it when that title and method are supported. The US product page describes the catalog as containing hundreds of games; that is an approximate marketing description, not a fixed count. The number and contents change over time.
Removal dates are part of the entitlement
Catalog titles can carry an announced end date. When a game leaves, the subscription license ends even if the game is already installed on your console. Starting it can produce a lock or an instruction to purchase the game or renew a qualifying service, depending on the situation. A download is only a delivery method; it does not freeze a title in the catalog.
Catalog games and their add-ons
Downloadable content and other add-ons for a catalog game follow the underlying game’s entitlement. If your membership ends or the base game leaves the service, access to associated DLC is lost as well. Access returns if you resubscribe or buy the game, subject to the add-on’s own platform and regional availability. Purchasing DLC alone does not create a permanent license for a catalog copy you no longer can play.
Which PlayStation Plus tier includes which benefit?
Benefits and names can vary by country. On the United States plan page, the tiers are described as follows:
| Tier | Monthly Games | Game Catalog | Other catalog-related benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Yes | No | The base PlayStation Plus benefits. |
| Extra | Yes | Yes | Access to the Game Catalog in addition to Essential benefits. |
| Premium | Yes | Yes | Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming, in addition to Essential and Extra benefits. |
Do not infer a local price, game lineup or feature from the US table. Check the PlayStation plan and games pages for the country where the account is registered. A tier can have a similar name but different catalog rights, streaming support or trial availability in another region.

What happens when your membership ends?
Monthly Games after cancellation
Monthly Games that you previously added at no extra charge become unavailable when the PlayStation Plus membership ends. They may remain visible in your library, but the subscription check prevents play. Resubscribing to a tier that includes Monthly Games normally restores the entitlement to those previously added titles; you do not need to add them again.
Game Catalog titles after cancellation
Catalog access requires both an eligible plan and the title’s continued presence in the service. Ending an Extra or Premium membership removes access to all catalog games, including those already downloaded. Renewing the corresponding plan can restore a title that is still in the catalog. It cannot restore a title that has departed; in that case you need to wait for a possible return or purchase the game.
Why the library entry can be confusing
The library is an inventory of products associated with your account, not a list of permanent licenses. A purchased game, an added Monthly Game and a downloaded catalog game can all appear together. Open the product page or transaction history to identify whether your access comes from a purchase or from PlayStation Plus before troubleshooting a lock icon.
Download versus cloud streaming
Downloading
Most games in the PlayStation Plus libraries can be downloaded to a compatible console. Downloading generally provides the most consistent experience because play is not dependent on a continuous stream, but it consumes local storage and still obeys the same membership and removal rules. Installing a catalog game before its removal date does not extend that date.
Streaming with Premium
Premium members can stream eligible Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles. Streaming is title-specific and is not universal access to every catalog game. Eligibility, supported devices and regional availability can change.

PlayStation’s US support information lists a minimum 5 Mbps connection for game streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are connection minimums, not guarantees of image quality or latency. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, data caps, household traffic and distance to a streaming server can still cause delay, compression or disconnections. If a game supports both methods, download it when you need stable response for competitive play or when your connection does not reliably meet the stated requirements.
Keeping track of changing availability
Monthly offer deadlines
Monthly Games change on a calendar-month schedule. Add every title you might play before the offer period closes, even if you do not intend to download it immediately. A late claim is not recoverable merely because you paid for the month in which the game appeared.
Catalog departure notices
Check the game’s detail page for a removal date before beginning a long campaign or buying add-ons. A departure date matters more than the day you installed the game. Save files generally remain on the console, but they do not grant permission to launch a removed subscription copy.
Regional differences
The catalog, monthly selection, language options, streaming eligibility and plan benefits can differ by account region. Use the regional PlayStation games and support pages tied to your account rather than relying on a list from another country. A title shown on a US page may not appear in the UK, EU or another market, and dates can differ.
Choosing between the benefits
Choose Essential when you want a recurring monthly queue
Essential is the relevant choice if your priority is adding each month’s games and keeping access to those claimed titles while subscribed. It does not provide the rotating Game Catalog on the US plan structure.
Best Value
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Choose Extra when you want a large on-demand library
Extra adds Game Catalog access. It suits players who prefer sampling many games without buying each one, provided they accept rotating availability and the possibility of a title leaving before they finish it.
Choose Premium for classics, trials and streaming
Premium includes the benefits of the lower tiers plus the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming on the US plan page. Its additional features do not change the basic rule: a streamed or downloaded subscription title is not a permanent purchase.
Troubleshooting common access problems
A claimed Monthly Game shows a padlock
- Confirm that the console is signed into the account that added the game.
- Check that the PlayStation Plus membership is active and includes Monthly Games.
- Restore licenses from the console account settings, then restart the console.
- Verify that the game is not a separate edition or region from the one you claimed.
If the membership expired, restoring licenses cannot bypass the entitlement check; renew the service first.
A downloaded catalog game stopped launching
- Look at the title’s product page for a catalog removal notice.
- Check that the account still has Extra or Premium, as required in your region.
- If the title has left, decide whether to purchase it or wait for a possible return; reinstalling the same download will not restore access.
DLC is missing
Confirm that the base game is still available through your membership or is owned outright. Subscription access to the DLC follows the base game. If you renewed or purchased the game and the add-on still does not appear, verify that the game and DLC share the same account region and edition.
Remote download is unavailable
Use the same account on the web browser or PlayStation App and console, enable the console’s internet and rest-mode features required for remote downloads, and make sure the title is still in the current Monthly Games offer. You can always add the game to the library first and download it from the console later.
Storage and long-term planning
Downloaded games can fill a PS5’s internal storage quickly. A compatible PS5 M.2 SSD can provide additional space, but storage capacity changes neither ownership nor the rules for Monthly Games and catalog rotation. Before buying a drive, confirm current PS5 compatibility requirements and installation guidance; the accessory itself is unrelated to subscription entitlement.
For a long campaign, check the catalog’s removal information before starting. For a monthly title, add it during the offer even if storage is full, then install it when space becomes available. This separates the entitlement decision from the storage decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe practical rule to remember
Add Monthly Games during their monthly window; select Game Catalog titles while they remain listed. Keep an active qualifying membership for either benefit, and remember that catalog titles can disappear independently of your subscription. A game in your library or on your drive is not automatically a game you own.
