PlayStation Portal Remote Play lets you play compatible PS5 games on the Portal while the game runs on your PS5. The console streams the game’s picture and sound to the handheld, and the Portal sends your controls back over the network. You need a PS5 connected to the internet, the same PlayStation account on both devices, and Remote Play enabled on the console.

What PlayStation Portal Remote Play does

Portal is a screen-and-controller endpoint for your PS5, not a standalone console. In Remote Play mode, the game runs on the paired PS5; Portal streams its audio and video and relays your inputs. The console must be connected to the internet and either on or in Rest Mode. Sony describes using Portal wherever you have a high-speed internet connection, so the devices do not have to be on the same Wi-Fi network when you play away from home. PlayStation Support’s Remote Play guidance explains the setup.

What you need

  • A PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
  • A PS5 connected to the internet.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and Portal.
  • Remote Play enabled for the relevant user on the PS5.
  • Broadband Wi-Fi for Portal and a stable network connection between Portal and the console.

A PlayStation Plus membership is not required for Remote Play itself, according to Sony’s Portal FAQ. A game may still require PlayStation Plus for its online multiplayer features.

How to enable Remote Play on PS5

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in to the PlayStation account you will use on Portal.
  2. Install the latest available PS5 system software. Sony recommends keeping the console updated.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play for the user.
  4. If you want Portal to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  5. Complete Portal setup, sign in with the same PlayStation account, and start Remote Play.

Once set up, you can connect from outside your home if the network conditions are suitable. You do not have to be on your home Wi-Fi.

What internet speed and Wi-Fi setup does Portal need?

Sony states that Portal needs at least 5 Mbps for use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s service thresholds and recommendations, not a promise that play will be smooth at every location. Stability and local network conditions matter as well as the stated speed. See Sony’s Portal FAQ and Remote Play setup guidance.

  • For the PS5: Sony recommends connecting the console to the internet by Ethernet where possible.
  • For Portal: Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • If both use Wi-Fi: Sony recommends connecting Portal and PS5 to the same Wi-Fi network. Band steering can cause connection issues; Sony advises disabling it if possible when connecting Portal.
  • For public Wi-Fi or play away from home: connection quality may be harder to control, so meeting the speed recommendation alone cannot guarantee a good session.

A particular router model is not required by Sony’s guidance.

Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are different

Remote Play streams from your own PS5. Cloud Streaming runs eligible games on Sony’s cloud service instead, so it does not depend on your PS5 being available. Sony says eligible cloud games can stream while your PS5 is off or in use with another account.

Question Remote Play Cloud Streaming
Where does the game run? On the paired PS5. On Sony’s cloud service.
Is a PS5 needed? Yes; it must be connected to the internet and on or in Rest Mode. No, for eligible games.
Is PlayStation Plus Premium required? No, not for Remote Play itself. Yes, with an active Premium membership.
Which games are available? Compatible games installed on the PS5. Games requiring a VR headset or unsupported peripherals are excluded. Selected eligible PS5 games; availability varies by title, region, and catalog.

Cloud Streaming also requires a PlayStation account, Portal, broadband Wi-Fi, and a supported region; it is unavailable to child accounts. Sony lists minimum upload and download speeds of 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Its Cloud Streaming page separately recommends 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p (4K). These are Sony’s Cloud Streaming figures, not the Portal Remote Play thresholds. Check Sony’s live Cloud Streaming information for supported regions and eligible games, which can change.

Compatibility and audio options

Portal Remote Play connects to a PS5; it does not connect directly to a PS4. Compatible PS5 games can be played remotely, but games requiring a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond supported controllers are not compatible. Sony’s Portal FAQ lists PlayStation Link products such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset as compatible audio options. You can also use wired earbuds or a headset with a 3.5 mm jack, or Portal’s built-in speakers. These accessories are optional.
