The graded card is usually sealed in a tamper-evident holder with a certification label. A number is not a universal condition code, however: a 10 from one company is not automatically equivalent to a 10 from another, and no grade guarantees a sale price or profit.
This guide explains the workflow, the defects graders inspect, what common grade labels mean, how Pokémon-specific issues such as sheet sticking are handled, and how to decide whether submitting a card makes sense.

How does Pokémon card grading work?
The exact workflow differs by company, but PSA’s published process provides a clear model: authentication comes before condition grading, and encapsulation follows the assessment. PSA states that “Authentication verifies the originality or genuineness of a trading card, while grading assesses the quality and condition.” (PSA Getting Started With Grading)
- Submission and intake: You select a service level, provide card and value information, and send the card according to the company’s current instructions.
- Authentication: The company checks whether the card is genuine. A card that is not authenticated does not proceed as a normal graded card.
- Condition assessment: Graders examine centering, corners, edges, surface and defects such as creases, stains, print flaws or handling damage. The result is a grade under that company’s published scale.
- Encapsulation and certification: PSA says the grade and certification number appear on its LightHouse label and the card is placed in a sonically sealed, tamper-evident case. Other companies use their own labels and holders.
That sequence is PSA’s published description, not a promise that every grading company uses identical checkpoints or equipment. Authentication and grading answer different questions: “Is this card genuine?” and “How well has this genuine card survived?”

What do graders look for?
A grade reflects several kinds of evidence. Centering is important, but it is only one part of the decision. PSA’s preparation guidance tells submitters to inspect centering, surface, edges, folds or creases, stains and other damage. CGC lists centering, manufacturing and handling defects, preservation, evidence of play, scuffing, indentations, soiling and fading among the factors it considers. (PSA guide; CGC grades FAQ)
Centering
Graders compare how evenly the printed image and borders sit within the card. Off-centering can be visible even when the rest of the card is clean. Do not treat an online centering estimate as a guaranteed grade: different defects can matter at the same time, and companies do not publish a single universal weighting formula.
Corners and edges
Sharp corners and clean edges support high grades. Whitening, rounding, fraying, chips or small dings may lower the assessment. These flaws can come from cutting, storage, shuffling or ordinary handling, so a card that was never played may still show edge or corner wear.

Scratches, scuffing, indentations, stains, fading, soiling and printing imperfections are surface evidence. A card can look centered in a photograph yet lose grade because of a shallow indentation or a defect visible only under angled light.

Creases, folds and evidence of play
Folds, creases and pronounced wear are more serious condition evidence than a tiny centering deviation. CGC specifically includes evidence of play among its condition factors. Inspect both the front and back, because a defect on the reverse still belongs to the card’s condition record.
Manufacturing versus handling defects
Not every flaw was caused by an owner. Cutting, ink, print registration and other production issues can be present from the factory. Graders still record the condition they see; whether a flaw is manufacturing-related does not automatically make it harmless.
What does a PSA 10, 9 or 8 mean?
The following descriptions are PSA’s own broad examples and should not be transferred to another company’s labels. (PSA grading guidance)
| PSA grade | PSA’s general description |
|---|---|
| 10 | Essentially perfect: extremely good centering, pristine corners and no surface damage or imperfections in the example description. |
| 9 | Nearly perfect, with one minor flaw in the example description. |
| 8 | Excellent overall condition, but it may show slight corner fraying, a minor printing imperfection or slight off-centering. |
| Lower grades | As condition declines, increasingly visible wear, scratches, rounding, creases, discoloration or other damage affect the assessment. PSA’s guide illustrates a progression rather than a promise that one particular defect maps to one fixed number. |
A PSA grade is an opinion of condition under PSA’s standards at the time of grading. It does not certify rarity, predict demand or set a resale price. PSA advises researching sold listings for the same card and grade because value is not known until grading is complete. (PSA Getting Started guide)

How do PSA, CGC and Beckett grades differ?
The same numeral can carry different terminology and standards. Compare the company, label, scale and available detail instead of performing a one-to-one numerical conversion.
| Company | Published scale or labels | Subgrades | Published holder or process details |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | 1–10 scale, with 10 highest. | Not stated on the cited service description. | PSA says authentication precedes grading; its grade and certification number are printed on a LightHouse label, and the card is sonically sealed in a tamper-evident case. (PSA card grading service) |
| CGC | 10 (Pristine) down to 1 (Poor), as described in its card FAQ. | CGC currently says it no longer offers subgrades. | Condition factors include centering, manufacturing and handling defects, preservation, play evidence, scuffing, indentations, soiling and fading. (CGC grades FAQ) |
| Beckett | Final grades in half-point increments. | Four subgrades are described on Beckett’s scale page. | Service availability is changeable; the current FAQ consulted for this guide reports Base and Standard temporarily unavailable and Express available through a temporary form for submissions to the Plano, Texas headquarters. (Beckett grading scale; Beckett service FAQ) |
The cited sources do not establish an official conversion such as “Company A 10 equals Company B 10.” A buyer or collector should read the company name, grade wording, scale and any subgrade information on the specific slab.
Pokémon-specific issue: sheet sticking
Some early Wizards of the Coast-era Pokémon cards with 1st Edition stamps can show evidence of “sheet sticking.” CGC explains that cards could stick together before the ink dried, allowing some stamp ink to transfer to another card. In its July 9, 2025 policy statement, CGC says it treats evidence of sheet sticking as cosmetic damage caused by a production quality-control breakdown rather than as an error; the extent of the damage determines its effect on the grade. (CGC’s sheet-sticking policy)
That is a CGC-specific policy. It should not be presented as a universal rule for PSA, Beckett or every other service. If you own an affected card, document the transfer clearly in photographs and check the receiving company’s current policy before submitting.

How should you prepare a Pokémon card for grading?
Preparation protects the card during handling; it cannot manufacture a higher grade. PSA recommends a penny sleeve inside a semi-rigid card holder before submission. (PSA submission guide)
- Inspect under good light. Check front and back for centering, whitening, corner wear, scratches, dents, stains, fading, creases and print defects. Use a clean surface and handle the card by its edges.
- Record your observations. Note obvious flaws and photograph the card for your own inventory. This helps you compare the returned card with the copy you sent.
- Use protective materials. Place the card in a penny sleeve, then in the semi-rigid holder PSA recommends. Do not force a card into a tight sleeve or holder.
- Estimate a realistic grade range. Treat online opinions as estimates, not promises. A precise grade cannot be predicted from centering alone or from a single photograph.
- Research sold listings. Look for recent sales of the same card in comparable grades. PSA specifically recommends this research when estimating declared value.
- Choose the service level and declared value. PSA says declared value is used to select a service level and set available insurance coverage. Its prices and turnaround estimates can change, and the estimates are not guaranteed. Check the live service page immediately before mailing.
- Verify current submission rules. Confirm accepted holders, forms, payment, shipping, insurance and whether the service is accepting submissions. Availability can change without matching older guides.
- Package for transit. Follow the company’s current packing and shipping instructions, use enough protection to prevent bending, and retain tracking and photographs of the package.
Why cleaning or altering is risky
Do not polish, trim, recolor, press or otherwise alter a card to hide defects. PSA’s grading standards identify evidence of alteration or cleaning as potentially adverse designations. (PSA grading standards) A card should be submitted in its existing condition, with any uncertainty disclosed through the company’s stated process.

Grading is most defensible when the card’s identity, condition or preservation matters enough to justify the fee, shipping, insurance and waiting time. It can provide third-party authentication, a documented condition assessment and a protective holder. It can also reveal a lower grade than hoped, and the grade itself does not guarantee buyer demand or a particular value.
Reasons to submit
- You want an authenticated, tamper-evident presentation for a significant card.
- You are preserving a card and prefer a certified condition record.
- Recent sold listings suggest that the card’s likely graded value justifies the total submission cost.
- You need the certification and label for a planned sale, inheritance record or insurance documentation.
Reasons to keep it raw
- The card is common or low value relative to fees, shipping and insurance.
- Visible creases, heavy whitening or other damage make a high grade unlikely and the slab would not add enough utility.
- You need the card available quickly and the company’s current turnaround estimate does not fit your schedule.
- Your goal is personal play or casual collecting rather than authentication, preservation or a documented condition.
There is no source-supported universal “best” grading company. Compare the published scale, labels, subgrade policy, authentication and holder details, current submission route, fees, turnaround estimates and your reason for grading.

What do PSA’s published grading statistics actually show?
PSA’s Getting Started page gives approximate population-level figures, not guarantees for an individual card and not Pokémon-only results. The page does not state a publication year for these percentages.
| PSA category | Approximate share at or above the stated grade | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-Modern Sport cards (2017–present) and Modern TCG cards (2003–present) | 90% received PSA 8 or higher | PSA describes the figure as approximate and says each card is graded individually; the TCG category is not identified as Pokémon-only. |
| Modern Sport cards (1986–2016) | 80% received PSA 8 or higher | Approximate company estimate; not a prediction for a submitted card. |
| Vintage TCG cards (pre-2003) | 80% received PSA 7 or higher | Approximate company estimate; the page gives no publication year and does not isolate Pokémon cards. |
These figures can provide broad context about PSA’s described submission populations, but they cannot tell you what your particular card will receive. Your card’s centering, surfaces, corners, edges, manufacturing defects and handling history remain decisive.
Fees, turnaround and availability
Submission economics are volatile. PSA publishes service prices and estimated turnaround times but states that estimates are not guaranteed. Beckett’s current service FAQ reports that Base and Standard submissions are temporarily unavailable while Express is offered through a temporary form for its Plano, Texas headquarters. Those statuses can change, so use the live pages rather than an old screenshot or forum post. (PSA service page; Beckett service FAQ)
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When calculating whether grading is worthwhile, add the grading fee, shipping to and from the facility, insurance, packing materials, taxes or duties where applicable, and the opportunity cost of waiting. Compare that total with recent sold listings for the same card and grade, not with an unsold asking price.
How to read a graded Pokémon card’s label
Start with the grading company, then read the card identification, grade wording, certification number and any qualifiers or subgrade information. The number alone is incomplete. A PSA 10, a CGC 10 labeled Pristine and a Beckett 10 with four subgrades are products of different published systems. Confirm the certification through the company’s own verification tools when available, and inspect the holder for tampering or damage.
Finally, treat the slab as documentation, not a price guarantee. Market value changes with card popularity, language, set, edition, population, buyer confidence and timing. Grading can make those details easier to communicate, but it cannot remove market risk.
