Choose a TV for a sofa-distance, shared-room setup; choose a monitor for a desk or close-up play. For either console, make 4K, 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), low input lag, fast pixel response and useful HDR your target features. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can output up to 120 frames per second in games that support it, so a 120Hz display is the practical ceiling for console gaming even when a panel is rated higher. The best choice still depends on screen size, viewing distance, room brightness, the exact display variant and your budget.
TV or monitor: which fits your open-world setup?
Open-world games benefit from a large image, smooth camera movement and clear distant detail. A TV generally makes more sense when you play from a couch, want a screen that others can watch, or need built-in speakers and television features. A monitor is usually the better starting point for a desk, a short viewing distance or a single-player setup where you sit directly in front of the panel. Neither form factor automatically has lower input lag or better picture quality; those characteristics belong to the individual model.

120Hz is the sensible console target
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support up to 120 frames per second in supported games. A 120Hz panel can display each of those console frames without the display becoming the limiting factor. A 144Hz or 165Hz monitor may be useful when connected to a PC, but it does not raise the consoles’ supported output limit. Check that the display accepts the console’s 120Hz signal at the resolution you intend to use.

VRR smooths uneven frame rates
Variable refresh rate allows the display to adjust its refresh timing to the game’s current frame rate. That can reduce tearing and make fluctuations feel less abrupt when an open-world scene becomes busy. VRR is not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate, and its range and supported signal can differ by model and input. Confirm the exact TV or monitor specification and the particular HDMI port you plan to use.
Input lag and pixel response are different
Input lag is the delay between a controller action and the image changing. Pixel response describes how quickly individual pixels change and affects trailing or smearing behind moving objects. RTINGS identifies VRR, fast response time and low input lag as useful gaming features. Look for independent measurements of the exact model and mode when available, and make sure the display’s game mode is enabled.
Specifications to check before buying
Use this checklist for every candidate. Marketing labels such as “HDMI 2.1” are not enough by themselves; verify the supported signal, resolution and refresh rate for each input.

- Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games.
- Resolution: 4K (3840×2160) gives the consoles their highest common detail level. A 1440p monitor can cost less and may accept 120Hz, but it shows less fine detail than 4K.
- Refresh rate: Target 120Hz for PS5 and Xbox. Higher ratings do not increase the console frame-rate ceiling.
- HDMI bandwidth: Confirm that the chosen port accepts 4K at 120Hz if that is your goal. Some displays have one high-bandwidth port while others provide several.
- VRR format and range: Verify that the console is supported and note which HDMI inputs provide VRR.
- Input lag: Check measurements at the resolution and refresh rate you will use, not only a headline number from a different mode.
- Response behavior: Fast transitions reduce visible trails in pans and combat. OLED and some fast LCD panels behave differently, so read model-specific testing.
- HDR brightness and contrast: HDR impact depends on peak brightness, black level, local dimming and how the display handles highlights. A label alone does not describe picture quality.
- Room brightness and reflections: A bright living room can wash out a low-brightness screen or reveal reflections. Consider placement and curtains as well as the panel.
- Ports and signal chain: Count the HDMI devices you will connect and include a soundbar or AV receiver in the bandwidth calculation.
- Exact variant: Size, region and model suffix can change the panel, ports or firmware. Verify the listing and manual for the version you are actually buying.
Recommended TV candidates and their trade-offs
TCL QM7L: a feature-rich 4K high-refresh option
TechRadar’s 2026 coverage describes the TCL QM7L with 4K 144Hz, FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision gaming and ALLM. Those features make it an appealing specification match for console owners who want 4K/120Hz capability plus headroom for other devices. The 144Hz rating is not a promise that a PS5 or Xbox will output 144 frames per second; use it as evidence that the panel is designed for high-refresh operation. Check the exact size and regional model before purchase, because available inputs and processing can vary.
LG B6: four HDMI 2.1 inputs and measured low-latency modes
TechRadar describes the LG B6 as having four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and Dolby Vision gaming. Four capable inputs are useful when a console, another console, a computer and an audio device all need direct connections. TechRadar reports 8.9ms input lag at 4K/60Hz and 4.9ms at 1080p/120Hz for its tested unit. Those are outlet measurements for the specific model and modes, not a universal performance figure for every television. Confirm the B6 size, regional variant and current firmware before relying on the result.
Hisense QD6QF: a lower-cost option with clear limits
RTINGS lists the Hisense QD6QF as a budget PS5 TV candidate but notes that it lacks HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for 4K/120Hz. It supports 4K/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz, with limitations around input lag and picture quality noted by RTINGS. That can be acceptable if your priority is a large 4K image at 60Hz or 120Hz at 1440p. It should not be treated as equivalent to a full-featured 4K/120Hz television.

Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx
RTINGS identifies the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx as a 4K Mini LED option. Mini LED backlighting can provide stronger highlight brightness and more controlled dark areas than a conventional edge-lit LCD, although the result depends on local-dimming behavior and viewing conditions. Verify which HDMI input supports the console’s desired 4K/120Hz signal and whether the monitor’s HDR mode is available at that setting.
4K versus 1440p for PS5 and Xbox
Choose 4K when you sit close enough to appreciate fine texture and distant environmental detail, or when you want the broadest compatibility with 4K console modes. A 1440p monitor can be a sensible value choice if you prefer 120Hz gameplay and a smaller desk display. The Hisense QD6QF illustrates the distinction: RTINGS reports 4K/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz, but no 4K/120Hz because the required HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is absent. Before buying a 1440p screen, check that the console accepts 1440p at 120Hz on that model; compatibility is not identical across displays.

Viewing distance, size and room conditions
Match size to the distance you actually sit
A large television viewed from a sofa makes map text and environmental detail easier to see, while a large monitor placed at arm’s length can force constant head movement. Measure the distance from your eyes to the screen and consider the game’s user-interface scale. Open-world titles often put small quest text, minimaps and inventory details at the edges, so a screen that looks impressive in a showroom may be uncomfortable at a desk.

Control glare before chasing specifications
Windows, lamps and glossy furniture can reflect in a dark game scene. Place the screen perpendicular to windows where possible, lower direct lights and use curtains before concluding that HDR or black levels are inadequate. In a bright room, a display with stronger sustained brightness may be easier to use; in a dim room, contrast and black-level behavior become more apparent.
Consider audio and furniture
TVs commonly fit a soundbar or receiver, but those devices can become part of the HDMI signal path. Monitors often require separate speakers or a headset. Leave enough space for ventilation, cable bends and the stand or wall mount, and check whether the display can reach the seating position without an extension that introduces another connection point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify 4K/120Hz and VRR before you buy
- Write down the target signal: for example, 4K at 120Hz with HDR and VRR, or 1440p at 120Hz if you are choosing a lower-resolution monitor.
- Read the exact model manual or specification table: identify which HDMI input supports that combination. Do not assume every socket has identical bandwidth.
- Check the console compatibility list: confirm that the PS5 or Xbox recognizes the resolution, refresh rate and VRR mode you want.
- Map your signal path: include any AV receiver, capture device or soundbar between console and display. Every link must support the target signal.
- Confirm the variant: recheck screen size, region, model suffix and firmware notes on the retailer and manufacturer pages.
Correct PS5 or Xbox setup
- Connect directly first: plug the console into the display’s known high-bandwidth HDMI input while testing. Add a receiver or soundbar only after the direct connection works.
- Use the supplied cable initially: the cable included with a PS5 or Xbox Series X is usually sufficient when connected directly to a compatible input.
- Enable the display’s game mode: this normally activates the lowest-latency processing. Select the manufacturer’s equivalent if the label differs.
- Turn on VRR and ALLM where offered: enable them in the display menu and in the console’s screen settings, then test with a game that supports the feature.
- Choose the console’s 120Hz option: set automatic resolution and refresh options first, then verify the console’s information screen reports the intended signal.
- Calibrate HDR in the console: follow the on-screen HDR adjustment rather than copying values from a different panel. Re-run it after changing picture modes.
- Test every device: switch between consoles, streaming devices and audio equipment to ensure the chosen HDMI input and cable work under the same conditions.
Cable and HDMI troubleshooting
The console will not show 4K/120Hz
- Move the cable to the display input documented for 4K/120Hz.
- Remove an intermediate receiver, switch or soundbar and test the console directly.
- Use the cable supplied with the console, then restart both devices after changing the connection.
- If you need a replacement, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and keep it as short as practical for the installation.
- Check whether the display’s 4K/120Hz mode requires a particular picture setting or firmware version.
VRR is unavailable or unstable
- Confirm VRR is supported at the selected resolution and refresh rate; some displays restrict it to specific inputs or modes.
- Enable VRR on both the console and the display, then power-cycle the complete signal chain.
- Test without a receiver or soundbar to isolate an intermediate-device limitation.
- Try a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI replacement cable if the original cable is damaged or the connection repeatedly drops.
Picture quality is poor despite the specification
- Disable excessive noise reduction or motion interpolation in game mode.
- Check HDR brightness and local-dimming settings with a real game, not only a demo clip.
- Reduce room reflections and view the display from the intended seating position.
- Confirm that you bought the intended regional and screen-size variant; similar names can hide different panels or port layouts.
How to compare cost without being misled
Think in capability tiers rather than a single “best” price. A lower-cost TV may deliver a big 4K/60Hz image but omit 4K/120Hz bandwidth, as the QD6QF example shows. Mid-range models can add 120Hz, VRR and stronger processing. Premium OLED or Mini LED monitors and TVs may improve contrast, HDR control and response behavior, but they cost more and still require a compatible console signal path. Prices and availability change by country, size and promotion, so compare the exact listing and not just the family name.

A practical buying decision
- Start with the room: choose TV for shared, distant viewing and monitor for desk use.
- Set the performance target: 4K/120Hz with VRR is the broad target; 1440p/120Hz is a valid value alternative when confirmed compatible.
- Shortlist by inputs: count HDMI devices and identify the ports that support the required signal.
- Compare picture behavior: examine HDR brightness, contrast, black levels, reflections and response—not only resolution.
- Check independent testing: use measurements for the exact model and mode, remembering that a tested result does not generalize to every size or region.
- Verify the final listing: confirm size, suffix, regional variant, warranty and current availability immediately before ordering.
There is no universal winner for PS5 and Xbox open-world gaming. A living-room player may prefer a large TV such as the feature-rich QM7L or the four-HDMI-2.1 LG B6, while a desk player may value a compact 4K OLED such as the PG27UCDM or AW2725Q, or a 4K Mini LED monitor such as the XV275K P5biipruzx. A budget buyer can consider the QD6QF only after accepting its 4K/60Hz and 1440p/120Hz limits. In every case, verify the exact display variant, HDMI input, console mode and room conditions before treating a specification as a guarantee.
