How PS5 Pro’s PSSR Upscaling Works—and How It Compares With DLSS and FSR

PSSR uses machine learning to upscale supported PS5 Pro games, but results vary by title. Here’s what Sony has disclosed and how to compare it with DLSS and FSR.

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for PS5 Pro. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game’s rendered imagery; it does not mean every game is rendered natively at 4K, and support depends on the game. Sony’s public description explains the basic idea, but not the full algorithm. There is also no established universal winner between PSSR, Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR: a useful comparison must control for the game, settings, hardware and output.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro

Sony introduced PSSR as an AI-driven, machine-learning-based upscaling feature for PS5 Pro, alongside the console’s upgraded GPU and ray-tracing features. In practical terms, upscaling lets a game produce imagery at a lower rendering cost and reconstruct it for a higher-resolution output. That is a design goal, not a promise that every supported game uses the same internal resolution or gains a fixed amount of performance. Sony’s launch description also notes that PS5 Pro enhancements apply to select games and vary by title: Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement.

PSSR is a console feature, not a separate accessory or a universal switch that applies to every PlayStation game. Sony’s product page positions it as AI-enhanced resolution for a 4K TV, but that does not establish that a particular television is required. Sony’s current page describes more than 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for PS5 Pro; that broader figure is not a count of games that support PSSR: PlayStation 5 Pro.

How PSSR reconstructs an image

In a February 27, 2026 announcement, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny described the process this way: “PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” That is the clearest public explanation of PSSR’s operation in the cited material. It supports describing the feature as image reconstruction, but Sony has not disclosed the complete network architecture, training data, game buffers, temporal inputs or reconstruction mathematics in these sources. It would be speculation to fill those gaps by assuming PSSR works like a PC upscaler.

PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

Upscaling is not the same as rendering every output pixel directly at the target resolution. PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from game imagery; it does not change a game’s art assets or guarantee a native-4K render. The exact trade-off between rendering cost, image quality and frame rate depends on each game’s implementation.

What changed in upgraded PSSR

Sony announced a substantially revised version in February 2026, saying it takes “a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm.” Cerny said the algorithm and network stem from Sony’s Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. Sony also said the revised PSSR is based on technology reflected in AMD FSR 4, with further refinement for PS5 Pro. That relationship does not make console PSSR and PC FSR 4 identical products, nor does it mean their results transfer unchanged between platforms. Read Sony’s February 2026 announcement.

Sony’s March 16, 2026 rollout post says the upgraded version aims for clearer fine detail, more precise reconstruction and better image and motion stability, while giving developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. Players can use the system option “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Sony cautions that results vary by title and says the option can be turned off if unexpected visual effects occur. See Sony’s upgraded-PSSR rollout post.

What developers report in specific games

The upgraded version’s reported benefits are game-specific developer impressions, not independent measurements that establish a universal result.

Resident Evil Requiem

Sony identified Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using upgraded PSSR. Masaru Ijuin, a senior manager in Capcom’s Engine Development Support/R&D Foundational Technology group, said it helped process intricate details such as individually rendered hair strands and texture characteristics. This describes Capcom’s account of that game’s implementation, not a result that can be assumed for other titles.

Control and Alan Wake 2

Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto said upgraded PSSR improved upscaling quality and stability in Control and Alan Wake 2, and responded quickly to visibility changes. His statement is a developer report about those games.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square Enix Director Naoki Hamaguchi reported that fine details such as character hair were restored more naturally than with original PSSR, with less flicker and afterimage. That observation is specific to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the developer’s comparison.

Sony said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles as of February 27, 2026. That is Sony’s dated count of titles using PSSR, not a count of games using the upgraded version or a claim about the number of games with the optional quality setting. The number should not be confused with Sony’s broader count of PS5 Pro-enhanced titles.

PSSR vs. DLSS vs. FSR: how to compare them

PSSR, DLSS and FSR are upscaling technologies integrated into individual games and tuned for their target hardware. PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro feature; DLSS and FSR are separate technologies used on compatible PC hardware and, in some cases, other platforms. A feature name alone does not tell you which implementation looks best or runs fastest.

Comparison axis What to check
Platform and hardware Compare the actual console or PC hardware running each version. Do not treat a PS5 Pro performance mode as equivalent to a PC benchmark on different hardware.
Game and implementation Use the same game and, where possible, the same build, scene, output resolution and graphics settings. A result in one title does not rank the upscalers across all games.
Image behavior Inspect fine geometry, foliage, hair, particles and thin lines, as well as motion, shimmer, flicker, ghosting and reconstruction stability. Sony and developers emphasize detail and stability for upgraded PSSR, but those descriptions are not a standardized cross-upscaler test.
Performance Compare frame rate alongside image quality at a comparable rendering workload. Different input resolutions, presets and platform constraints can make a headline frame-rate comparison misleading.
Evidence Separate official technical descriptions and developer comments from independent, controlled comparisons. A single-game test can inform a decision about that game, but cannot settle a technology-wide ranking.

The cited sources do not establish a matched, multi-game test of PSSR, DLSS and FSR with controlled hardware, settings, input resolutions and captures. They therefore support neither a universal winner nor a fixed image-quality or performance uplift. For a particular game, the meaningful question is which available mode offers the best balance of clarity, stability and frame rate on the hardware you use.
