Minecraft Ice Caves can spawn the mobs that normally spawn in caves, plus Strays and Frostbites. Those two additions are named in both the current Java snapshot and Bedrock Preview changelogs. Neither changelog gives a complete list of ordinary cave mobs.
Which mobs are confirmed in Ice Caves?
The official Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3 changelog says Ice Caves can host “the mobs that normally spawn in caves,” and adds Strays and Frostbites. The Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog names the same additions.
- Strays: explicitly named as able to spawn in Ice Caves.
- Frostbites: explicitly named as able to spawn in Ice Caves.
- Ordinary cave mobs: the changelogs refer to them as a group but do not enumerate the roster.
Is there a complete list of regular cave mobs?
Not in the cited Ice Caves changelogs. They do not specify every ordinary cave mob or establish whether that baseline differs between Java and Bedrock. For that reason, the confirmed answer is limited to Strays and Frostbites alongside the general cave-mob category—not a definitive list of every creature you might encounter.
Which versions have Ice Caves?
| Edition/build | What the official notes establish |
|---|---|
| Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3 | Ice Caves are a new cave biome that can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes. Changelog published October 6, 2026. Official Java notes. |
| Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 | Ice Caves are described as an experimental feature in Drop 4 of 2026 content and can appear under low-temperature biomes. Changelog published September 30, 2026. Official Bedrock Preview notes. |
These notes document a Java snapshot and an experimental Bedrock preview; they do not establish that Ice Caves are available in a stable release. Check your edition and build before searching for the biome.

Do hostile mobs need darkness to spawn there?
Lighting matters to hostile mob spawning generally, but the cited Ice Caves notes do not give a biome-specific light threshold. Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs Part II overview says mobs “will now only spawn in complete darkness,” while its general mob guide says hostile mobs spawn at night and in poorly lit areas such as caves. These are general explanations, not a separate Ice Caves rule. See the Caves & Cliffs Part II feature overview and Minecraft’s mob guide.

In the Java snapshot notes, the biome is described as consisting mainly of Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles, occasional snow patches, and Ice Crystals. It can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes. The Bedrock Preview notes describe Ice Caves as appearing under low-temperature biomes.
