1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf by “spawn in a Nether Fortress” you mean having a fortress generate near where you enter the Nether, the chance depends on your edition and is calculated per region—not as a fixed probability for the area around your portal. The Minecraft Wiki reports a 40% chance per region in Java Edition and 33.3% in Bedrock Edition. It also reports a chance that none of the four closest regions contains a fortress: 13.0% in Java and 19.8% in Bedrock.
That is different from mobs spawning inside a fortress. Fortress mob-spawning rules apply only after the structure exists.
How likely is a fortress to generate nearby?
The figures below come from the Minecraft Wiki’s fortress-generation tutorial. They describe generation by Nether region, not the chance of a fortress appearing at an exact distance from your portal.
| Edition | Fortress-generation chance per region | Chance of no fortress in the four closest regions |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 2/5 (40%) | 13.0% |
| Bedrock Edition | 1/3 (33.3%) | 19.8% |
In practical terms, the tutorial’s figures make a fortress slightly more likely to generate in a given region in Java than in Bedrock. But the four-nearest-region figures also show why a player can enter the Nether without finding one nearby: the tutorial reports that outcome for 13.0% of cases in Java and 19.8% in Bedrock.

What the percentages do—and don’t—tell you
- They are regional odds. The 40% and 33.3% figures apply to a region’s fortress-generation chance, not to a circle of a specified radius around the player.
- They do not predict a particular seed. A percentage describes the stated generation rule; it cannot tell you whether your world has a fortress near your entry point.
- They are attributed figures, not independently verified current-version rates. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial is community-maintained, and its figures are not independently confirmed here against Mojang source code or a specified game version and settings.
Fortress generation is not mob spawning
Players sometimes use “spawn in a fortress” to mean that hostile mobs appear there. That is a separate mechanic from whether the fortress structure generates at all. The Nether Fortress reference discusses fortress-specific mob-spawning rules; those rules do not change the regional structure-generation percentages above.
