A “Mending villager” is a librarian whose trade offers a Mending enchanted book. The offer is randomized, but there is no reliable single rarity percentage that applies to every Minecraft edition, version, trade slot, and setting. In ordinary trading, you can check an untraded librarian’s offer and reroll it by replacing its lectern.
What counts as a Mending villager?
It is not a separate villager type: it is a librarian with a Mending book among the trades shown in the trading screen. Librarians sell enchanted books for emeralds. The offer depends on the game’s trading rules, so “how rare” cannot be answered accurately with one percentage for every player.
Why there is no universal Mending-villager percentage
Book-trade probabilities differ between Java and Bedrock, and the result also depends on which librarian trade slot or tier you are counting. Optional Villager Trade Rebalance rules can change how some enchanted books are obtained, including biome-dependent librarian trades. Those rules are experimental or optional in the cited material; their availability and behavior should not be assumed for every platform or version.
To make a meaningful odds estimate, you would need to specify the edition, game version, whether trade rebalance is enabled, and the particular trade slot. Without those details, a standalone percentage can be misleading. The practical answer is that the offer is random, but you can reroll it before trading.

How to reroll a librarian’s book offer
- Place a lectern near an eligible villager so it can take the librarian profession.
- Open the trading screen and inspect the available book offer.
- If the book is not Mending, break and replace the lectern to cycle the untraded villager’s offers, then check the trading screen again.
- Once Mending appears, make the trade. Trading locks the villager’s offers, so do not trade first if you still intend to reroll.
This method describes ordinary randomized trading. If trade-rebalance rules are active in your version, book availability may follow different rules, so check the rules for that specific setup.
