The Dragon Egg’s listed drop chance depends on which Dark Mage you defeat: it is 16.67% from a Tier 1 Dark Mage in Classic Mode, 25% from a Tier 1 Dark Mage in Expert Mode, and 8.33% from a Tier 3 Dark Mage. It summons Hoardagron, a pet dragon that follows you.
Dragon Egg drop rates
The Official Terraria Wiki lists these chances for the base-game Dragon Egg:
| Dark Mage source | Listed chance | Approximate odds |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1, Classic Mode | 16.67% | About 1 in 6 |
| Tier 1, Expert Mode | 25% | About 1 in 4 |
| Tier 3 | 8.33% | About 1 in 12 |
These are the rates listed in the Official Terraria Wiki’s Dragon Egg entry, which covers Desktop, Console, and Mobile. It does not give separate odds by platform or date these rates to a specific changelog, so treat them as the page’s listed chances rather than as independently verified platform-specific results.
Is the Dragon Egg rarer in Expert Mode?
Not for a Tier 1 Dark Mage: the listed chance is higher in Expert Mode than in Classic Mode (25% versus 16.67%). Do not apply that 25% figure to every Dark Mage. The listed Tier 3 chance is 8.33%.

What drops the Dragon Egg, and what does it do?
The Dragon Egg is listed as a drop from the Dark Mage during the Old One’s Army event. Using it summons Hoardagron, a pet that follows the player; its tooltip reads “Summons a pet dragon.”

Don’t confuse it with Ocram’s Dragon Mask
The base-game Dragon Egg is the Hoardagron pet-summoning item, not Ocram’s Dragon Mask. Ocram is documented as a legacy boss associated with old-generation console and Nintendo 3DS content, and the Dragon Mask is listed as a legacy drop on the Official Terraria Wiki’s Ocram page. Modded items that also use the name Dragon Egg are separate from the vanilla item discussed here.
