Last Epoch began when action-RPG fans connected on Reddit and founder Judd Cobler recruited fellow enthusiasts to make a game. Reddit helped form the founding team; it did not develop or operate the game. The project went on to seek community feedback, crowdfund, and develop through Steam Early Access before its full 1.0 launch.
How did Redditors come together to make Last Epoch?
In a September 2023 interview with GamesBeat, Eleventh Hour Games founder Judd “Moxjet” Cobler described a group of gamers who met through Reddit because they shared a love of action RPGs and wanted to create one of their own. Cobler said he had neither game-development experience nor funding when he started recruiting people through the platform. The early team included eight people.
The “built by Redditors” description is therefore an origin story: Reddit was where the founders connected and where Cobler found collaborators. It does not mean Reddit itself made the game, or that the released title was created solely by an informal volunteer group. The project became the work of Eleventh Hour Games as it developed and grew.
What role did the community play in development?
The early team spent 18 months communicating with players about the systems they wanted before producing a vertical slice to support crowdfunding, according to GamesBeat’s account. That process positioned the community as a source of feedback and a way to find like-minded collaborators, not as a body with control over studio decisions.

In a September 2022 developer blog, game director Judd recalled the project’s beginnings as “an after-hours passion project by a bunch of ARPG-obsessed Redditors.” The post also described repeated iterations on multiplayer and an always-online closed alpha intended to gather feedback. Cobler later put the studio’s relationship with its audience succinctly: “We literally are the community,” he told GamesBeat in 2023.
How did Last Epoch move from a small team to a released game?
- Formed through Reddit: Cobler recruited action-RPG fans, creating an initial team of eight, as reported by GamesBeat.
- Built a playable slice and crowdfunded: After working with community input, the team prepared a vertical slice and launched a Kickstarter. GamesBeat reported a $210,000 goal and $255,378 raised from 2,824 backers.
- Entered Early Access: GamesBeat reported the game came to Steam Early Access about a year after the Kickstarter campaign. The studio continued developing the game with community involvement.
- Reached 1.0: Eleventh Hour Games announced that Last Epoch’s full launch would take place on February 21, 2024. Its official launch-date announcement recounted the path from an after-hours Reddit-formed team, through Kickstarter, to Early Access.
What has happened since the 1.0 launch?
GamesBeat reported that Last Epoch had passed 2.5 million copies sold by April 17, 2025. That is a dated sales milestone, not a current lifetime total.

The official Steam announcement feed says Season 4, Shattered Omens, launched on March 26, 2026. It also describes work toward the first full expansion, Last Epoch: Orobyss, and preparation for PlayStation 5. The announcement does not establish a PlayStation 5 release date or confirm the expansion’s availability, so those plans should be treated as subject to change.

What “built by Redditors” does—and does not—mean
- It does mean the founders met through Reddit and Cobler recruited fellow action-RPG fans there.
- It also reflects a development process that sought player input, used crowdfunding, and continued through Early Access before the 1.0 release.
- It does not mean Reddit as a platform developed or operated Last Epoch, that every Reddit contributor stayed involved, or that players controlled the studio’s decisions.
