Capcom credits the 1996 original with popularizing survival horror, while the series’ later entries repeatedly changed how close danger feels, how vulnerable the protagonist is and how much the player can fight back.
What did Resident Evil do for horror games?
It made survival a playable loop
Capcom dates the first Resident Evil to March 22, 1996, and describes it as the game that established the series and helped popularize survival horror. Its own early description emphasizes using weapons and other items to escape dangerous situations. That is a careful way to understand the series’ historical role: Resident Evil helped codify a recognizable survival-horror identity, but horror games did not begin with it, and the available evidence does not establish that the series alone created every convention later associated with the genre.

The design is more than fighting monsters. In a 2016 interview, Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi described five recurring pillars: fear and horror, environmental exploration, puzzle solving, resource management and combat against enemies. The combination matters. Exploration and puzzles make the environment something to read; resource limits make choices consequential; combat gives the player a way to act, but does not remove the pressure of being in danger.

Capcom developers have described a particular tension at the heart of the series: horror creates pressure, while weapons, puzzles, difficult situations and story revelations give players ways to respond. In an anniversary interview, the developers called the catharsis of overcoming fear something distinctive to games. The player is not simply watching a frightening story unfold; they are learning, choosing and surviving inside it.

How did Resident Evil change over time?
The original established the identity
Capcom’s account of the 1996 debut centers on escaping frightening situations with weapons and other items. That establishes a durable design question for the series: how much danger can the player manage with what they have? Later games would shift the presentation, scale and combat emphasis, but they continued to work with the tension between vulnerability and action.
Resident Evil 7 brought the threat close
For Resident Evil 7 biohazard, released in 2017, Capcom said the team wanted to evoke the fear of the 1996 game in a contemporary form. Nakanishi said the demo foregrounded horror and exploration. Producer Masachika Kawata explained that the first-person camera was chosen to place players in the character’s position and make the experience more direct and visceral; the game was built with Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine.

The change was also about who the player was and where the danger came from. Capcom described the new protagonist, Ethan, as an ordinary person rather than one of the more capable, heavily equipped heroes associated with some earlier entries. The Louisiana plantation setting brought the threat down from the global stakes of recent installments to one person in one location. This made the shift feel intimate: vulnerability came not only from what the player encountered, but from the character’s limited capacity to confront it.
Despite its new perspective, protagonist and scale, Capcom explicitly said Resident Evil 7 was not a reboot and did not discard the canonical storyline. Its design reset was a change in how the player experienced the series, not an exit from the mainline continuity.

Village combined first-person fear with more action
Resident Evil Village continued Ethan’s story and retained the first-person perspective Capcom called “Isolated View.” The company also characterized it as more action-oriented, with more combat options and larger enemy encounters. That combination complicates any simple account of the series as moving in one direction—from action back to horror, or from horror toward action. Village kept the close viewpoint while giving the player more ways to fight and confront larger threats.
Remakes created another route for evolution
The series has changed not only through new mainline games, but also through reimagined older entries. Capcom said fan demand led to reimagined versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, describing the franchise as one that tries new things across generations. This is a different kind of evolution from Resident Evil 7: revisiting an earlier game does not necessarily solve the same creative problem as building a new installment, and the evidence does not establish one shared design purpose for every remake.

How the series changed the player’s relationship to danger
Capcom’s descriptions show several distinct levers for changing the feel of danger. The entries below are not a ranking; they illustrate how the series can retain recognizable survival-horror concerns while shifting the player’s position within them.

| Design choice | What it changes | Capcom-documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Point of view | A closer camera can make danger feel more immediate and personal. | Resident Evil 7 uses first person to make the experience more direct and visceral; Village retains that perspective. |
| Protagonist | A less capable character can heighten the sense of vulnerability compared with a heavily equipped hero. | Capcom described Resident Evil 7’s Ethan as an ordinary person. |
| Scale and setting | A localized threat can make horror intimate rather than global in scope. | Resident Evil 7 centers on one person and a Louisiana plantation, contrasting with the scale of recent installments Capcom discussed. |
| Horror-action balance | Foregrounding exploration or expanding combat options changes how much the player is encouraged to avoid, investigate or confront danger. | Capcom said Resident Evil 7 foregrounded horror and exploration, while it described Village as more action-oriented. |
| Continuity and reimagining | A new mainline story and a reimagined earlier game offer different ways to revisit the series. | Capcom described Resident Evil 7 as a mainline sequel and discussed reimagined versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. |
Which Resident Evil game should you start with?
There is no single entry that suits every newcomer. Capcom USA’s guide, dated October 18, 2024, offers Resident Evil 2 (2019) as a staff-recommended starting point. A separate staff comment in the same guide calls Resident Evil 7 the scariest entry; that is a staff opinion, not a universal ranking. The guide also lists Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 and Village as games with VR versions. Platform compatibility and edition availability can vary, so the guide’s list should not be treated as current purchase or hardware advice.
- For a staff-recommended starting point: consider Resident Evil 2 (2019), as suggested in Capcom USA’s 2024 guide.
- For the first-person, intimate horror shift: Resident Evil 7 is the clearest example of Capcom’s stated design reset within mainline continuity.
- For a more action-oriented continuation of that perspective: Capcom describes Village as retaining first person while expanding combat emphasis.
What the series’ scale does—and does not—prove
In a June 12, 2020 corporate release, Capcom said the franchise had passed 100 million cumulative worldwide shipments, and reported 7.5 million cumulative units for Resident Evil 7 biohazard at that time. Those are company-reported shipment and unit figures, not counts of active players or proof of a measured industry-wide effect. They demonstrate the franchise’s commercial reach by that date, not that one series single-handedly defined all horror games.
The lasting design idea
Resident Evil’s evolution is best understood as a changing balance rather than a straight line. The series keeps returning to fear, exploration, puzzles, resource management and combat, but changes how exposed the player feels, how large the threat is and how forcefully the player can respond. That is how a recognizable survival-horror identity can persist through reinvention: the player is placed in danger, made to learn its rules, and given the chance to survive it.
