Roblox is a platform where people discover and play many separate online experiences—not one standalone game. You can join and play for free, use an avatar to represent yourself, and optionally spend Robux on items or upgrades. Roblox also provides Roblox Studio, the tool creators use to build and publish experiences. Social and communication features depend on account age, settings, and region.
What is Roblox?
Roblox brings together experiences made by users and professional creators. An experience might be an obstacle course, a racing game, or a creative simulation. Players choose which experiences to enter, and can play online with others. Roblox is also a creation platform: people use Roblox Studio to design, build, and publish experiences for others to play. Roblox’s overview of the platform describes these uses.
Is Roblox free?
Yes. Roblox says joining and playing are free. Robux is optional virtual currency, not a requirement for basic access. Roblox lists avatar items and in-experience upgrades among the things people can buy with Robux; whether an individual experience offers paid items or upgrades depends on that experience.
What is a Roblox avatar?
An avatar is the player’s representation in Roblox experiences. Players can use Robux for some avatar items, but buying items is optional. An avatar is separate from the experience itself: changing how a character looks does not mean you have bought or unlocked every experience or feature.

How do social features and chat work?
Playing together and communicating are related, but they are not the same feature. Roblox has settings for in-experience chat and direct chat, while an individual experience may also include communication features created by its developer. Roblox’s platform-level controls do not necessarily govern those developer-created features.
Chat and voice eligibility depend on account age, settings, and regional availability. Roblox’s Safety Center says chat is off by default for Kids accounts and describes age-based chat settings for Select accounts; voice chat is available only in some regions. These defaults and options can change, so families should check the current Roblox Safety Center and account settings rather than assume a feature is available to every player.

What are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select?
Roblox announced global availability of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select on June 16, 2026. In that announcement, Roblox describes Kids accounts for ages 5–8 and Select accounts for ages 9–15. Roblox says users are automatically placed in the account appropriate to their age, and that chat remains disabled for users younger than 9. These are Roblox’s stated age bands and defaults; settings and features vary by region.
The account experience also shapes which content maturity options and communication settings are available. Parents can use linked parental controls to manage content access and block experiences. A block may not take effect until the child enters the experience again. Consult Roblox’s Safety Center and parental-controls information for current options.

How do parents manage spending?
Roblox’s parental-controls page says parents can set a monthly limit for spending on Robux and subscriptions to individual experiences. The limit resets at the end of each calendar month and does not roll over. Roblox also says gift-card redemption does not count toward that limit, so the spending control should not be treated as a cap on all value added to an account. Check the current parental-controls page for available settings and details.
What safety information does Roblox report?
Roblox’s April 2, 2025 parental-controls announcement said the company rolled out more than 40 safety updates in 2024. It also described a parent view of the 20 experiences a child spent the most time in over the preceding week. These are figures and tool descriptions reported by Roblox, not an independent assessment of how effective the controls are.

The practical takeaway is to use account-specific settings, review content access and spending controls, and understand that an experience can include developer-created features beyond platform-level settings. Roblox’s controls and stated safeguards do not establish that every experience or communication feature is covered in the same way.

Creators use Roblox Studio to design, build, and publish experiences. Roblox describes Studio as a tool for creators ranging from novices to experienced developers. This is the basic distinction: players enter experiences on Roblox, while creators use Studio to make them. The platform overview describes Studio at a high level; specific building steps depend on what kind of experience someone wants to create.

How can families learn the platform together?
Roblox’s Family Zone is an experience intended to help parents and children learn platform basics and safety through co-play. Roblox VP of Civility & Partnerships Tami Bhaumik described its premise this way: “We built Family Zone because the best way to learn about Roblox is to play on Roblox.” Treat that as Roblox’s description of the experience, not an independent safety evaluation.
