Roblox is a platform for many user-created games, with social features that vary by game and account. Whether it is a good fit depends on your child’s age, the games they choose, who they interact with, and the settings available in your region.
What Roblox’s age-based accounts allow
Roblox’s current guidance describes three age-based account groupings for users whose age has been checked. The exact features can vary by region, so check the settings displayed on your child’s account.
| Account grouping | Age described by Roblox | Game maturity access | Chat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5–8 | Minimal or Mild | Off by default; a linked parent may be able to enable certain in-game chat where available. |
| Roblox Select | 9–15 | Minimal, Mild, or Moderate | Options increase with age; some settings can be changed by a parent. |
| Full Roblox experience | 16 and older | Subject to Roblox’s restrictions | Features depend on account age, settings, and region. |
These categories are not a judgment that every game within a rating suits every child. Roblox says all games go through moderation and that games available to users younger than 16 receive additional selection and review. A rating provides a maturity guide, not a guarantee about every moment of play. Parents can block or allow specific games through parental controls. Roblox’s May 20, 2026 explanation of age-based protections and its parental controls guide describe these safeguards.
How chat and contact work
Roblox says chat requires an age check, but it is not accurate to assume all chat is always off or that every friend can contact a child. Kids accounts have chat off by default; Select accounts have options that increase with age. Roblox documents restrictions involving similar-age users and Trusted Friends, with available features and age rules depending on account age, settings, and region.
#1 Best Overall
Review the child’s live communication settings rather than relying on a general description of the platform. Consider experience chat, direct or party chat, who can contact the account, whether Trusted Friends are enabled, and any voice features shown in the account. Roblox’s Safety Center explains its current approach, but the locally displayed controls are the best guide to what is enabled for your child.
Set up parental controls before play
Roblox parental controls can cover content maturity, communications and connections, screen time, spending, and access to particular games. The company says that in most regions parents can manage all settings through age 12, while some controls remain available through age 15. Its global rollout information also describes linked-parent access to friends and screen-time and spending limits for children until 13. Those thresholds and controls are not identical everywhere; use the child account’s current settings to confirm what you can manage.
- Link a parent account. Roblox recommends this as the first step for seeing and managing a child’s activity and available controls.
- Set a content maturity level. Choose an appropriate level and block or allow individual games as needed.
- Review communication and connections. Check who can contact the child and which chat types are available and enabled.
- Set practical limits. Use screen-time and spending controls that fit your family’s rules.
- Revisit settings as the child grows. Age-based features change, and regional availability can differ.
Use the live Roblox parental controls page for current options; the controls shown for one age or region may not match another.
Stay involved in the child’s Roblox use
Roblox recommends that parents link an account, explore the controls, and play a game with their child. In practice, ask the child to show you a favorite game, talk about who they play or chat with, and agree on what they should do if an interaction feels uncomfortable. You can also practice how to report or block a user together.
Rank #3
Reporting and blocking are available when a user or game raises concern. Explain that the child should tell a trusted adult as well, especially if someone pressures them, asks for personal information, or makes them uneasy. Roblox’s Safety Center provides its safety guidance, and its Safety FAQs acknowledge that “no system is perfect.”

Age checks, maturity ratings, chat restrictions, moderation, and parental controls are company-described safeguards. They offer tools for narrowing content and contact, but the official material cited here does not quantify how often children encounter harm or independently measure how effective these protections are in practice. Treat settings as risk-reduction measures, not a substitute for family involvement.
Roblox published its global availability announcement for Kids and Select accounts on June 16, 2026. Since account features can vary by region and change with age, confirm the child’s current options in the account rather than assuming a rule applies identically everywhere. Roblox’s announcement describes the rollout.
