What is a Runner shell in Marathon?
A Runner is a mercenary whose consciousness can be re-uploaded into a new shell after death. Bungie describes shells as moddable biosynthetic bodies, each designed around a gameplay archetype. A shell supplies a starting role and abilities; it does not lock the player into one unchangeable playstyle.

As Bungie put it in its January 15, 2026 overview: “Each Runner shell is built around a different gameplay archetype, such as intel gathering, combat disruption, or combat healing.” Players can customize shells with cores, implants, weapons, and mods. Bungie’s Vandal examples illustrate how those choices can emphasize either traversal and mobility or a more disruptive approach. Which Runner shells are in Marathon?
Bungie’s June 2, 2026 Season 2 article listed seven shells: Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Sentinel, Thief, Triage, and Vandal. Its September 24, 2026 announcement added Bishop as a planned shell for the Symbiosis update, which was scheduled for December 8, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, Bishop and the other Symbiosis features were announced plans, not live content. Bungie’s Season 2 article documents the seven-shell list, while its Symbiosis announcement describes the planned addition of Bishop.

What happened to Locus, Blackbird, Glitch, and Void?
The April 12, 2025 reveal-era article identified four Runners: Locus as a soldier, Blackbird as reconnaissance, Glitch as disruption, and Void as stealth. It also said two more remained unrevealed at that time. Those labels reflected what had been announced then; they are not the later official roster. The available sources do not establish that any of the four names are exact aliases for a later shell. The April 2025 article should be read as historical reveal coverage, not as a current roster guide.
How should you compare shells?
Start with the role you want to play, then consider the shell’s specific tools and how your build could shift its strengths. The documented descriptions support comparing combat, stealth, intel gathering, disruption, defense, mobility, and area control. They do not provide a complete, like-for-like mechanical comparison across every current shell, so they cannot support an objective ranking of which shell is best.

What is confirmed about the next shell update?
Bungie’s September 24, 2026 announcement set December 8, 2026 as the planned date for Symbiosis and announced Bishop as part of that update. Bungie had also announced a smaller October 6 refresh for progression, rewards, and the live experience. The cited announcements do not establish the detailed contents or effects of that October refresh, so it should not be treated as a source for additional shell abilities or roster changes. Bungie’s September 14 update announcement describes the October refresh at that level of detail.
