A skill’s available support sockets limit how many supports it can use. Since update 0.3.0, duplicate Support Gems are allowed, but duplicate copies of the same Skill Gem are restricted in main skill sockets, with stated exceptions.
What Skill Gems and Support Gems do
Skill Gems provide abilities
A Skill Gem is associated with an ability your character can use. When evaluating a build or a gem combination, focus on the specific skill being modified; a Support Gem does not automatically affect every skill or the character as a whole.
Support Gems modify eligible skills
Socket a Support Gem into one of a skill’s support sockets to modify that skill. Whether the Support applies depends on its wording and the skill’s actual mechanics. A Support that can be socketed is not necessarily useful in every situation: its conditions may not match how the skill behaves. Check the current gem description, and test unusual interactions in-game.
How support sockets limit a setup
The number of support sockets on a Skill Gem sets the number of Support Gems you can attach to that skill. Grinding Gear Games’ 0.2.0 patch notes describe Jeweller’s Orbs as setting a Skill Gem to a specified number of Support Gem sockets. For example, the notes say a Perfect Jeweller’s Orb sets a Skill Gem with two support sockets to five. This is the socket-setting behavior described in those notes, not a general statement about every orb or crafting cost.

What changed in update 0.3.0
Update 0.3.0 changed which duplicate gems you can use. The official 0.3.0 patch notes state that the restriction on using only one copy of each Support Gem per character was removed: “You can use as many copies as you like.” The update also added 11 Support Gems and 40 Lineage Supports for endgame.
Duplicate Support Gems are allowed
You can use multiple copies of the same Support Gem, subject to the usual socket and skill-eligibility limits. This rule concerns Support Gems; it does not mean every duplicate gem type can be equipped without restriction.

Duplicate Skill Gems remain restricted
The 0.3.0 notes prohibit socketing duplicate copies of the same Skill Gem into the main skill sockets. The notes specify exceptions: skills not granted by gems and skills socketed into Persistent Buff Skill Gems do not count toward that limit. These are the stated exceptions, not a general exemption for other duplicate Skill Gems.
Attribute requirements can disable a Support
If you do not meet an attribute requirement for a socketed Support Gem, the Support is disabled while the Skill remains enabled, according to the 0.3.0 notes. If a skill works but a linked Support does not, check whether your character meets that Support’s requirements.

How to decide whether a Support fits a skill
- Read the Support’s current wording. Identify its conditions, effect, and any stated cost, cooldown, or other tradeoff.
- Check the skill’s mechanics. Determine whether that skill actually meets the Support’s conditions; do not assume compatibility guarantees that every clause will matter.
- Check sockets and requirements. Confirm the skill has an open support socket and that your character meets the Support’s attribute requirements.
- Compare alternatives on the same skill. Consider eligibility, the Support’s direct effect and tradeoffs, socket availability, and attribute requirements. Avoid relying on numerical performance claims unless they match the gem level and game version you are using.
Why current gem descriptions matter
Gem properties and compatibility can change between updates. Grinding Gear Games’ official Path of Exile: Mirage announcement introduces new Gems and changes to existing Skill and Support Gems; its comparison data is for level 20 gems at 20% quality. A description or build guide from an earlier update may not reflect the current version, so verify the gem text in-game before relying on a specific combination.
