A Creation can add a mission, gear, skin, weapon, or another type of content. Before installing one, check its current requirements, platform and game-version notes, and whether it is explicitly tagged Achievement Friendly. Bethesda says ordinary Creations disable achievements, and achievements do not retroactively unlock on an earlier save simply because a Creation later receives the achievement-friendly tag.
In Starfield, the word “mod” can describe several different things, but Bethesda’s supported player-facing channel is called Creations. You browse and manage these optional additions from inside the game rather than treating every mod as the same kind of file or feature. The catalog can contain missions, equipment, skins, weapons and other content, so the installation and save-file consequences depend on the individual Creation.

Bethesda announced Creations in the June 9, 2024 Starfield Update 1.12.30. The same announcement mentioned the Starfield Creation Kit as a separate Steam download for people who want to make content. You do not need the Creation Kit to download and play a Creation made by someone else.

What “mods” mean in Starfield
Creations are a catalog, not one uniform mod type
A Creation is an optional package listed in Starfield’s Creations catalog. One entry might add a quest or location; another might change equipment, visual items or weapons. Because the catalog spans different categories, two Creations can have very different requirements and can affect a save in different ways. Read the listing for the specific item instead of assuming that rules for one Creation apply to every other entry.

The Creation Kit is for authors
The Creation Kit is development software distributed separately through Steam. It is intended for people building Starfield content, not for players who only want to install existing Creations. Installing the kit does not install a Creation into your game, and downloading a Creation does not require you to become a creator.
Four checks to make before installing anything
Use the item’s current listing as the source of truth. Bethesda’s catalog, tags and requirements can change, and the official material does not provide a permanent compatibility matrix covering every platform, game build and Creation.

Decide which save should receive it
If you are midway through a story or care about preserving an unmodified playthrough, make a separate save before experimenting. Keep an untouched save available rather than relying on deletion to reconstruct a previous state. This is a practical precaution, not a promise from Bethesda that every Creation can be cleanly removed.
How to install a Creation through Starfield’s official menu
Bethesda directs players to the in-game Creations menu. The exact button text can change with an update or platform, so follow the command shown on the current item page.

- Update Starfield first. Apply the game update required by your platform, then launch the game normally. If the Creation listing names a minimum build, treat that requirement as mandatory.
- Open the Creations menu. From Starfield’s in-game menus, choose Creations to open the catalog.
- Open the individual listing. Read its description, category, requirements, platform notes and achievement status. Do not rely on a search result title alone.
- Review the achievement tag before confirming. If the item is not explicitly marked Achievement Friendly, assume achievements will be disabled while that Creation is active.
- Use the listing’s install command. Select the on-screen option to add or install the Creation and wait for the game to finish. If the item requests another dependency or a restart, complete that step before loading your character.
- Load the intended save only after checking the result. If the game reports a missing requirement, an incompatible version or another warning, stop and resolve that condition instead of forcing the save to load.
The official announcement describes Creations as available through the in-game menu; it does not establish one permanent set of button labels for every platform. A current listing’s instructions take priority over a remembered menu path.
Do Starfield Creations disable achievements?
Bethesda Support’s rule is specific: “Creations will disable achievements in Starfield unless they are tagged as ‘Achievement Friendly.’” In practical terms, inspect the current tag on every item before adding it to a character whose achievements matter.
What changed with Verified Creator content
Bethesda’s November 19, 2024 update introduced an achievement-friendly status for certain releases from its Verified Creators program. That status is not automatic for every Creation and is not a blanket exemption for the catalog. The individual listing must carry the applicable tag.

Why an old save may still be affected
The same November 2024 announcement states: “Achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous game saves with Creations, even if those Creations are now achievement friendly.” A later tag change therefore should not be treated as a repair for a save that already contained Creations. If achievements are a priority, check the tag first and use a clean, appropriately prepared save rather than hoping a future update will restore missed unlocks.

How to disable or uninstall a Creation
Use the in-game Library
Bethesda’s support procedure is:
- Open Starfield’s Creations menu.
- Go to your Library.
- Locate the Creation you want to remove.
- Choose Delete to uninstall it, or use the available option to disable it instead.
This is the official menu route for managing a Creation. It is not a guarantee that every change already written to a save will disappear. A quest that has started, an item that has been placed, or another persistent change may not be universally reversible simply because the package is deleted.
Return to an original save when necessary
Bethesda Support says players can disable Creations and return to an original save through Select Character in the Load menu. Treat that as a fallback to an earlier, unaffected save rather than as an automatic cleanup tool. If you have no earlier save, the support guidance does not promise that deleting a Creation will reproduce the original state.
Compatibility: what is known and what you must verify
The official pages do not publish a complete, permanent table covering every Creation, console or PC configuration, and game version. Compatibility is therefore a property of the particular listing and the build you are running.
- Read the current description. Check dependencies, required updates and any stated limitations before installing.
- Confirm your platform. Do not assume that an item listed in the catalog supports every version of Starfield.
- Watch for game updates. A patch can change behavior or requirements; revisit the item’s notes if a Creation stops appearing or working.
- Avoid importing unsupported assumptions. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal load order, a universal backup format or third-party PC installation procedure.
For third-party distribution methods or tools outside the in-game catalog, consult the current instructions supplied with that specific mod and its creator. Bethesda’s in-game documentation should not be presented as a complete guide to every external method.

Common problems and the safest response
The Creation is not visible in the catalog
Reopen the Creations menu after confirming that Starfield is updated and that you are looking at the exact title. Catalog contents are live and can change. If the entry still does not appear, check the item’s current availability and platform notes rather than installing an unrelated package with a similar name.
The game reports a missing requirement
Stop before loading the affected save. Return to the listing, identify the named dependency or minimum game build, and satisfy that requirement using the instructions shown there. Do not assume that a similarly named item is interchangeable.
Achievements are no longer unlocking
Check whether an active Creation lacks the Achievement Friendly tag. If the save already contained Creations, remember that Bethesda says achievements will not retroactively unlock merely because a Creation later becomes achievement friendly. Use an earlier clean save for an achievement-focused run when that distinction matters.
The game behaves differently after removal
Disable or delete the Creation from Creations > Library, then use Load > Select Character to return to an original save if one is available. Bethesda’s risk notice means you should not treat removal as proof that every in-world change has been undone.

You are considering external PC mod instructions
The official sources covered here do not document a complete third-party PC workflow. Follow the current instructions for the exact mod, including its requirements and supported game build, and keep the official in-game Creations process separate from those external methods.
Choosing whether to install a particular Creation
Use this decision sequence before you confirm an installation:
- Do you need achievements on this character? If yes, proceed only when the item is currently marked Achievement Friendly, and do not expect a later tag change to restore achievements on an earlier save.
- Do you understand what the item adds? Identify whether it is a mission, gear package, skin, weapon or another category, and read all requirements.
- Does the listing support your platform and build? Verify those details at the time of installation; they are not guaranteed by the general Creations label.
- Can you fall back to an unaffected save? If not, create a separate save before experimenting and recognize that Bethesda does not guarantee complete reversibility.
- Are you comfortable with optional content on this playthrough? If the answer is no, keep the run unmodified and test the Creation on a separate character instead.
What Bethesda’s official route does—and does not—promise
The official route gives players a catalog inside Starfield, a Library for disabling or deleting entries, and a documented way to select an original character save after disabling Creations. It does not turn every Creation into the same type of add-on, guarantee cross-platform compatibility, provide a universal load order, or promise that removing a package reverses every save change.
The most important habit is to evaluate each Creation individually. Check its current description and achievement tag, confirm the platform and game build, preserve a fallback save, and install only when you accept the consequences for that particular playthrough.
