In an August 31, 2023 interview with MobileSyrup, original Super Mario Bros. co-designer Takashi Tezuka described how the team pursued that balance: invent new discoveries while preserving the core course-and-mastery loop.
Why familiar Mario surprises can lose their impact
Tezuka co-designed the original Super Mario Bros. with Shigeru Miyamoto, and later directed Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, according to Bradly Shankar’s interview for MobileSyrup. He described novelty as an ongoing design problem: discoveries that once felt surprising—such as entering a pipe or hitting an item block—can become familiar through repetition.

The goal was not to remove those recognizable pleasures, but to find new surprises that could serve a similar role. As Tezuka put it, “one of the challenges we placed on ourselves, one of the pieces of homework when we began development, was to come up with new surprises that would fill the role of things like entering a pipe to go to a new area or hitting a block to get a new item.”
What the team wanted to keep
For Tezuka, freshness did not mean replacing Mario’s fundamental play pattern. He said the team wanted players to replay courses, become more proficient with the skills they need, and discover new things as they played again. In that approach, mastery and surprise support each other: familiarity helps players improve, while new details give them reasons to look and explore.

That is Tezuka’s explanation of the design aim, not a claim that every 2D Mario game followed an identical development process. His remarks also do not establish a measurable standard for how fresh the series has remained since its beginnings in 1985.
How Wonder’s development constraint encouraged new ideas
Tezuka said the team temporarily set a rule during development: they could not use enemies, gimmicks, or gameplay elements from previous titles. He explained that developers might otherwise lean on past successes, and that the restriction created a development environment the team had not used before. The interview does not quantify the rule’s effect or establish that it alone produced the game’s final design.

Wonder Flowers make the new-surprise idea concrete
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Nintendo Switch, Wonder Flowers can transform stages with new enemies, obstacles, and set pieces, as described in the interview. Nintendo’s official product page also presents Wonder Flower effects as a central gameplay feature. They show how the game can alter what happens within a course while retaining the course-based structure Tezuka described.
