Super Mario Party Jamboree expands the series’ familiar board-game formula with a larger published minigame lineup, seven boards, strategic options and online modes built for groups of up to 20. That makes “more chaotic” a fair description of its broader play—not a measurable claim that every session is more fun. Its 2018 predecessor already offered a varied set of modes, and later gained online board play.
What Jamboree adds to the Mario Party formula
The core loop is familiar: roll dice, move around a board, compete in minigames, collect coins and chase Stars. Jamboree’s expansion comes from layering more activities and decisions around that loop.
Nintendo lists over 110 minigames for Jamboree, compared with 80 for Super Mario Party. Those are Nintendo’s published content counts, not independently audited totals. Nintendo says most of Jamboree’s minigames are new to the series.
Jamboree has seven boards: five new settings and two returning ones, Western Land and Mario’s Rainbow Castle. The boards also introduce distinct interactions. Goomba Lagoon’s tide changes the routes available, while Western Land features a train.

Jamboree Buddies and Pro Rules
On a board, players can reach and beat a Showdown Minigame to recruit a Jamboree Buddy: a temporary CPU-controlled ally with a perk that may award extra coins or Stars. Recruiting one can make a detour worthwhile, but it also asks players to weigh that opportunity against pursuing a Star directly.
Pro Rules offer a more strategy-focused alternative to the standard setup. For example, players can have the Bonus Star announced before the game or select an item before play. These options reduce some surprise; they do not replace the usual rules for everyone.

How the extra modes change the group dynamic
Jamboree includes modes that shift the goal from winning a board game to competing or cooperating in different ways:
- Koopathlon: A competitive minigame race for up to 20 online players.
- Bowser Kaboom Squad: An online cooperative mode for up to eight players, who work together against Impostor Bowser.
- Party-Planner Trek: A single-player route across five boards.
- Minigame Bay: A collection of minigame activities.
The larger online groups and the contrast between racing rivals and cooperating against a common opponent give sessions different social shapes. The main Mario Party mode supports up to four players on one system.

How it compares with Super Mario Party
Super Mario Party, released for Nintendo Switch on October 5, 2018, was not just a board game with minigames. Nintendo lists Partner Party, single-player Challenge Road, cooperative River Survival, rhythm-based Sound Stage and Toad’s Rec Room alongside its traditional Mario Party mode. Jamboree therefore builds on an already varied predecessor rather than introducing variety or cooperative play to the series.
| What to compare | Super Mario Party (2018) | Super Mario Party Jamboree (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Published minigame count | 80, listed by Nintendo on its product page. | Over 110, listed by Nintendo on its 2024 product information. |
| Boards | Traditional board play is included; the cited product information does not state a comparable board count. | Seven: five new boards and returning Western Land and Mario’s Rainbow Castle, according to Nintendo. |
| Examples of other modes | Partner Party, Challenge Road, River Survival, Sound Stage and Toad’s Rec Room. | Koopathlon, Bowser Kaboom Squad, Party-Planner Trek and Minigame Bay. |
| Online board play | Nintendo added online play for Mario Party, Partner Party and minigames in an update on April 27, 2021. At launch, Online Mariothon had been its only online mode. | Online features include Koopathlon for up to 20 and Bowser Kaboom Squad for up to eight; Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account are required. |
That online history matters: comparing Jamboree only with the predecessor’s launch-day online options would overlook the 2021 update. The clearest distinctions are Jamboree’s larger stated minigame pool, seven-board selection, Buddy and Pro Rules mechanics, and its large-group online race and cooperative mode.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV
Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV is a separate edition, not an update to the original Switch release. Nintendo’s product information describes 20 new minigames using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, HD rumble 2 and the built-in microphone, as well as Jamboree TV. The edition also includes 78 minigames from the original game. A compatible USB-C camera is optional for some features.
Which version fits your party?
The original Switch game is the relevant choice if you want Jamboree’s boards, expanded minigame lineup and modes on that system. If your group wants the Switch 2-specific Jamboree TV features and new controller-based minigames, compare those edition-specific additions before choosing. For online play in either case, confirm the mode’s player limit and requirements; motion-minigame plans also need compatible Joy-Con controllers.
