Masahiro Sakurai reportedly credited Satoru Iwata with helping come up with the name Super Smash Bros. The account comes from a secondary summary of a Sakurai video, however, and does not establish a verified transcript or a definitive explanation of every word in the title.
Who came up with the name Super Smash Bros.?
In a 2024 Reddit post summarizing a Sakurai video, Sakurai is reported to have said that Iwata helped him come up with the name. The post also attributes to Iwata an idea about the fighters being friends settling a disagreement, but that phrasing is a secondary report—not a confirmed verbatim quote. The available account supports Iwata’s involvement; it does not provide an authoritative transcript or settle the precise meaning of “Bros.” Read the Reddit summary.
That makes the safest answer a collaborative naming anecdote, rather than a fully documented word-by-word origin story. In particular, there is no basis here for saying the fighters are literally brothers.
What was the game called before Super Smash Bros.?
The name came after the idea for the game was already taking shape. A retrospective account of the series says Sakurai and Iwata’s early prototype was called Kakuto-Geemu Ryuoh, translated as “Dragon King: The Fighting Game.” It was developed at HAL Laboratory before Nintendo approved the project. That history explains the game’s early development, but it does not establish how the final title was coined. Nintendo Life’s series retrospective.

Nintendo’s Iwata Asks archive also preserves first-party retrospective interviews about the making of Super Smash Bros. and Iwata’s relationship with Sakurai. Those interviews are useful context for their working relationship, but the development history should not be mistaken for a confirmed etymology of the name. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks archive.

No. Sakurai’s reported explanation of the familiar emblem concerns its design: the crossed lines signify the crossover, while the four sections of the circle represent four-player multiplayer. That is an explanation of the logo, not evidence about why the words “Super Smash Bros.” were chosen. Nintendo Life’s report on the logo.
