Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 mixes turn-based commands with real-time attacks and defenses: choose what your party does, then react to enemy moves and timed prompts. To learn the timing, watch an enemy’s movements and the turn-order display, start with dodge, and practice parries once you recognize an attack sequence. If the timing is getting in the way, Story difficulty offers more forgiving defense windows.
How turn-based combat works
The game calls its system “reactive turn-based combat”: strategy determines your commands, while timed inputs shape offense and defense. Sandfall Interactive describes the design as combining turn-based strategy with dodge, parry, counterattack, timed attacks, and free aim (Sandfall Interactive’s launch announcement).

Before acting, check the turn-order display to see what is coming and when an enemy is likely to attack. Then use skills, timed attacks, and defensive inputs as the situation demands. The order of turns helps you prepare, but it does not provide one universal cue for every enemy move: attacks have different patterns, so learn each sequence by watching it.
Dodge or parry: which should you use?
| Choice | Timing demand | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dodge | More forgiving than parry | Evades the incoming attack | A practical first choice while learning an enemy’s pattern. |
| Parry | Tighter and more precise | Negates damage on a successful parry; parrying an entire enemy combo can trigger a counterattack | Try it after the sequence is familiar and you can respond consistently. |
PlayStation’s gameplay preview describes dodge as having a larger timing window than parry. Xbox Wire’s starter guide likewise recommends beginning with dodge. A successful parry can negate damage, but the preview ties a counterattack to parrying the whole enemy combo; do not assume one well-timed input guarantees that reward.

Button labels depend on platform
On PS5, PlayStation’s preview lists Circle for dodge and R1 for parry. Xbox Wire’s guide lists B for dodge and RB for parry in its Xbox control context. Those labels should not be transferred to other platforms.
A practical way to learn enemy timing
- Read the turn order. Use the display to anticipate upcoming actions and get ready to defend, rather than waiting until an attack is already underway.
- Watch the movement. Pay attention to the enemy’s attack sequence. Treat each pattern as something to learn; the sources do not establish one cue that works for every attack.
- Dodge while the pattern is new. The wider timing window gives you more room to react while you learn. Focus on evading the attack, not on forcing a parry.
- Try parry when you recognize the sequence. Its tighter timing demands a more precise response. Against a combo, distinguish parrying a single hit from successfully parrying the entire sequence.
- Adjust your approach after a miss. Return to dodge until you can read the movement more reliably, or lower the difficulty if defense timing is blocking progress.
There are no published frame counts, millisecond windows, or per-enemy timing tables in the cited official guidance. Be wary of advice that gives one exact timing rule as universal.

Choose a difficulty that fits your timing practice
PlayStation’s official FAQ lists three difficulty settings. It describes Story as weakening enemies and making dodge and parry windows more generous, Expeditioner as balanced, and Expert as requiring precision.
| Difficulty | What PlayStation says | How it affects learning |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Enemies are weaker and dodge and parry windows are more generous. | Choose it if strict timing is getting in the way of progress or enjoyment. |
| Expeditioner | A balanced challenge. | A middle ground for players who want to engage with both timing and party strategy. |
| Expert | Requires precision. | Best suited to players who want stricter inputs, not as the default for learning. |
The developer has said defense windows vary with difficulty. In Xbox Wire’s January 23, 2025 Developer_Direct coverage, Sandfall CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche explained: “So you’re not supposed to parry everything, of course, that would be far too hard.” You can change difficulty rather than treating every attack as a test you must pass with a parry.

Reduce combat QTE input pressure
Xbox Wire’s starter guide says combat QTE inputs can be automated. Use that option if you would rather reduce the input burden or focus on the animations; it is not a claim that every action or defense becomes automatic.

Timing is only one part of combat. PlayStation’s preview says basic attacks do minimal damage compared with skills against powerful enemies, and describes free aim for targeting weak points or objects during encounters. Consider the enemy and the situation before relying on basic attacks alone.

Party choices and builds also matter. The game has six characters and a three-character active party, according to PlayStation’s preview and FAQ. Official sources identify character-specific mechanics such as Gustave’s Overcharge and Lune’s Stains, and describe gear, stats, skills, and synergies as ways to shape a build. Match your choices to the encounter instead of expecting better defensive timing to solve every problem.
Gameplay programmer Tom Guillermin described the design challenge in an Unreal Engine interview: “Finding the right balance for those real-time elements took a while, especially timings for the dodge and parry, but I think we’ve reached a sweet spot today”. The interview excerpt does not expose a publication date.
