How Teams and Combat Work in THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK

KOF AFK team size depends on the mode: the overview describes 5-vs-5, while Story Stage deployment later expanded to nine. Learn how formations, buffs and mode-specific rules shape lineups.

THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is an idle RPG built around assembling teams, choosing formations and adapting to the rules of each mode—not a conventional real-time 1v1 fighting game. The official overview describes 5-vs-5 battles, but a later update expanded Story Stage deployment to nine fighters. Team size and useful lineup choices therefore depend on the mode and its current rules.

What do team roles mean in KOF AFK?

There is no established universal tank, damage-dealer and support chart in the official material available for this guide. Those familiar RPG terms can be useful shorthand for what a fighter appears to do, but they should not be treated as official categories or as a complete formula for building a team. Check each fighter’s current in-game information for their skills and effects.

The game is framed as a pixel-art idle RPG with strategic team battles and player-created lineups. Its official overview presents combat as 5-vs-5, while its launch announcement also describes character collection, PvP modes and pets that assist in combat. Netmarble’s KOF AFK overview and launch announcement establish that broad framing, but do not provide a complete skill-by-skill guide.

How many fighters can you deploy?

It depends on the mode. Netmarble’s overview uses five-versus-five as its general description, but its April 16, 2026 update says Story Stage deployment was expanded from five fighters to nine. That is a Story Stage-specific update, not evidence that every battle uses nine fighters. Check the current deployment limit shown in the mode before building around a particular number.

  • Customizable Triggers – Toggle analog/digital trigger stops to suit your playstyle

Netmarble has also described formations and decks that can combine up to 15 different fighters. A deck’s roster capacity is not the same as the number deployed in a particular battle: the mode’s formation and deployment rules determine who actually enters combat. The April 16, 2026 Story Stage update and Netmarble’s formation and deck announcement describe these separate details.

How should you build a team for a stage?

  1. Check the mode’s deployment limit and formation. Confirm how many fighters can enter and which lineup you are selecting; do not assume the Story Stage limit applies elsewhere.
  2. Read the stage’s active buff before battling. Challenge contents can add rules that change which lineup is valuable. Netmarble’s tips give a Yamata no Orochi: Moon stage example where the buff increases Moon damage according to the number of Moon fighters deployed.
  3. Match the lineup to the actual modifier. When a buff rewards a fighter type or tag, consider deploying more eligible fighters if that helps meet the stage condition. The example does not establish that every challenge buff works the same way.
  4. Review current fighter details in game. Use the displayed skills and effects rather than assuming that a fighter’s genre-familiar role or an old team recommendation still applies.

Netmarble’s Challenge Contents tips recommend checking buffs before battles and illustrate why a strong general-purpose lineup may not be the best fit for every stage.

How do combat rules differ by mode?

Mode or system What the official material establishes What to check
Story Stages Deployment increased from five to nine fighters in the April 16, 2026 update. Confirm the current limit and formation in game; the update is specific to Story Stages.
Challenge contents Stages can have unique buffs. One published example increases Moon damage based on the number of Moon fighters deployed. Read the individual stage buff and build for its condition.
Champions Cup Netmarble’s May 14, 2026 announcement describes a PvP mode focused on fighter combinations and strategic team compositions. It said matches take place on weekends and entry was limited to players ranked in the top 50 in Ranked Battle. Check current schedule and eligibility; those conditions are dated to the announcement and may change.
Club Battle and Console Skills Netmarble has described Club Battle, Console Skills, exclusive skills and area-of-effect attacks, alongside formation and deck-building. Check which skills and systems apply to the specific mode; the announcement does not establish identical rules everywhere.
Pets The launch announcement says pets assist in combat. Consult current in-game descriptions for their effects; the announcement does not establish detailed mechanics or a best-pet recommendation.

The Champions Cup details come from Netmarble’s May 14, 2026 announcement. Its schedule and entry condition should be understood as what that announcement stated, not as guaranteed permanent rules.

Is there one best KOF AFK team?

Not without specifying the mode, current patch and available roster. A lineup that suits a challenge buff may not be ideal for a PvP match, and Story Stage deployment has different limits from the overview’s general 5-vs-5 framing. Start with the mode’s deployment rules and objective, then account for any active stage modifier and the current fighter details shown in game.

The official material supports team and formation choices as strategic systems, but it does not establish a universal slot-by-slot role formula, complete targeting rules or a timeless best-team list. Treat recommendations built around a fixed tank/DPS/support template as a guide to verify against the actual fighters and mode, not a rule supplied by the game.
