A driver’s special skill is the special item that driver can use. For score chasing, players often favor Coin Box, Boomerang, Giant Banana, and Lucky Seven, but Nintendo does not publish an official best-to-worst ranking. The strongest choice depended on the course, race context, and whether the goal was points, defense, or simply playing a favorite character.
Service status: Mario Kart Tour’s live service ended on September 29, 2026. Nintendo’s support notice gives the end time as 11:00 p.m. PT; Nintendo UK’s game page marks the service discontinued.
What a driver’s special skill does
A special skill determines the special item associated with a driver. Nintendo’s examples are Mario’s Fire Flower and Peach’s Heart. It is separate from a kart skill, which affects actions such as Rocket Starts and Mini-Turbo boosts and the points earned from them, and from a glider skill, which affects the chance of receiving a particular item and points gained when using it. See Nintendo’s special-skills FAQ.
That distinction matters when choosing equipment: the driver governs the special item, while the kart and glider contribute their own action and item-related effects. Nintendo also describes high scores as depending on combinations of drivers, karts, and gliders, not the driver skill alone (Nintendo UK’s game page).

How skills connect to Frenzy
To start a Frenzy, a driver must be on a favorite course and receive three of the same item. During the short-lived Frenzy, the player can use that item without limit and is invincible, according to Nintendo’s description. Nintendo also says higher driver levels make Frenzy activation more likely. The mechanics are summarized in its Frenzy FAQ, driver, kart, and glider level FAQ, and game description.
A skill can therefore matter both through its item in ordinary racing and through the opportunities that item creates during a Frenzy. But the chance to enter Frenzy and the score from a race also involve course eligibility, levels, and the rest of the driver-kart-glider combination.

Which special skills were most useful for scoring?
For score-oriented play, community advice commonly highlights Coin Box, Boomerang, Giant Banana, and Lucky Seven as “plus skills”—items players regard as having unusually strong scoring potential, particularly when their Frenzies are used well. This is a player heuristic, not an official Nintendo ranking; the available official sources do not establish a universal order or comparative performance figures. A community discussion of score-oriented skills illustrates that strategic view.
- Coin Box: Often valued by score chasers for its coin-generating potential.
- Boomerang: Commonly included among score-focused “plus skills”; its value depends on opportunities to use the item effectively.
- Giant Banana: Also frequently treated as a strong score-oriented option, especially when its item and Frenzy create useful scoring opportunities.
- Lucky Seven: A recurring community favorite for score potential, though no official source here quantifies its advantage against the other choices.
These descriptions reflect community strategy, not a guaranteed outcome or a complete item-by-item performance comparison. Course coverage, race position and circumstances, driver level, and a player’s scoring objective all affect which driver is practical to use. No attributable official win-rate or scoring percentages establish an exact ranking.

Choose by your goal, not by a universal tier list
| Goal | How to think about the skill | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Chase a high score | Consider the community-favored Coin Box, Boomerang, Giant Banana, and Lucky Seven, then weigh the course and the rest of the loadout. | Community strategy favors these for scoring potential; Nintendo does not provide an official ordering or comparative figures. |
| Use an item defensively or for utility | Judge the item by what it can do in the race situation, not only by score-chasing advice. | The sources establish that a driver’s skill determines its special item, but do not provide a complete comparative utility ranking. |
| Play a preferred character | A favorite driver can be the right choice when enjoyment matters more than optimizing a score. | This is a player preference; Nintendo’s material does not rank skills for enjoyment. |
What changed after service ended

The skills and scoring discussion above describes how the game’s mechanics worked and how players valued them; it is not advice for starting the discontinued live service.
